There’s a little bit of something for everyone this weekend in Hampton Roads.
From a Pirate Party in Virginia Beach to incredible shows on stage and screen, you’ll find something spectacular to entertain in every city.
We’re not kidding about the spectacular stages, either. This weekend we’ll see the Beach Boys. Carrie Underwood, The Wiz, Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat, the Global Film Festival, and even catch the Beatles (well, but really, but pretty close!).

A highly successful evening’s entertainment, this hilarious farce revolves around a young man, Hickory Wood, who has to prove he is the only child of a former business associate of a rich mill owner in order to receive 10,000 pounds. Unfortunately, his efforts are thwarted and complicated by the arrival of the other claimants, creating some first class and uproariously funny situations. Thursday-Sunday/The Global Film Festival/Kimball Theatre
Launched in 2008 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Williamsburg Theater, the festival is held annually in February at the historic Kimball Theatre in Colonial Williamsburg. Programming includes a pre-festival series of five films, which are introduced by William and Mary faculty, as well as screenings of international and student-produced films. The Global Film Festival takes pride in encouraging the development of student filmmakers, and initiatives this year include our Student Short Film Competitions and the DIY/FIY project. An array of special events and invited speakers also provide the community with exciting opportunities to engage in the festival experience.

You can capsulize most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they’ve had and how many millions of albums they’ve sold. But these conventional measurements fall short when you’re assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. To be sure, this band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that it changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt.

In preparation for the Jamestown 1619 commemoration and in celebration of the 90th anniversary of “Negro History Week” now known as African American History Month, the Bells Mill Historical Research and Restoration Society, Inc. (an educational, research and archival organization based in Chesapeake) are hosting books/history exhibitions and a lecture by Curator Dr. E. Curtis Alexander.

1 p.m./African-American History Month Film Fest: “Glory”/Virginia War Museum
Starring Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Matthew Broderick, this 1989 movie chronicles the all-black 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Their final assault on Fort Wagner, S.C. demonstrated their bravery and turned a bitter defeat into a symbolic victory that brought recognition to black soldiers. Free with paid admission.
8 p.m./Beethoven Festival/Ferguson Center for the Arts
Guest conductor Taeyoung Lee leads a concert featuring VSO musicians Yun Zhang and Rebecca Gilmore Phillips and Sentara’s Music and Medicine resident musician, pianist Prisca Benoît. Beethoven’s daring and rarely performed Triple Concerto features the violin, cello and piano each as soloist, boldly showcasing the virtuosity of each musician. His warmest and perhaps most beloved symphony, the merry and expressive Symphony No. 6, “Pastorale,” fills listeners with happiness and wonder, with each movement mimicking an aspect of pastoral life, from gathering of country folk, to the murmuring brook, to the Shepherd’s song of Thanksgiving.

This year, the 15th annual eight mile parade is dedicated to the memory of Buffalo Soldier Carroll Cuffee, 10th Cavalry and Buffalo Soldier Gidwood Sutton, 9th Cavalry.
