Chesapeake

All City of Chesapeake offices, courts, libraries, and community centers will be closed on Monday, July 4. The Chesapeake Visitor’s Center will be open normal hours throughout the holiday period.

There will be no changes to trash or recycling collection schedules and library book drops will also remain open on the holidays.

Normal operating hours for all facilities will resume on Tuesday, July 5.

Hampton

City Offices Closed Monday, July 4

Garbage Collection No regular recycling, refuse, bulk trash or yard waste collection on Monday, July 4. Monday collections will be made Wednesday, July 6.

Newport News

Newport News City offices will be closed on Monday, July 4 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. This includes City Hall, City offices at City Center at Oyster Point, Newport News Waterworks’ customer services offices, the Public Works Operations Center, and both locations of the Treasurer’s Office and Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office (City Hall and Denbigh).

In addition, all Newport News public libraries and the Newport News Recovery Operations Center (formerly the Residential Waste Drop-Off & Composting Facility, i.e., landfill) will be closed on Monday, July 4.

All garbage, recycling, and bulk waste collections for the week will be delayed one day, i.e., Monday’s collections will take place on Tuesday, Tuesday’s on Wednesday, Wednesday’s on Thursday, and Thursday’s on Friday.

The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter, which serves the residents of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and York County, will be closed on July 4th. NOTE: The shelter will still be open for owner surrenders, stray drop-offs, and owner re-claims from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Norfolk

The City of Norfolk’s government offices, including City Hall, will be closed on Monday, July 4, 2016 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. The closures include the offices of the Commissioner of the Revenue and the City Treasurer.

Circuit, General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations courts will also be closed on Monday, July 4, 2016.

Libraries, including Slover Library, will be closed Monday, July 4, 2016. Recreation centers and all indoor pools will be closed Monday, July 4, 2016 but outdoor pools will be open during normal business hours. Beach lifeguards will be on duty from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

There will be no trash collection on Monday, July 4, 2016. Requests for bulk waste collection for Tuesday, July 5, 2016 must be made by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 1, 2016. The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and E-waste collection site located at 1176 Pineridge Road will also be closed on Monday, July 4, 2016. The Division of Towing and Recovery accepts unwanted E-waste 24-hours a day and seven days a week at 1188-A Lance Road. Norfolk Residents must provide proof of residency; driver’s licenses or utility bills will be accepted.

Portsmouth

City offices: Closed Monday, July 4

Trash pick up: No trash pickup Monday, July 4. Trash will be collected on Wednesday, July 6

Suffolk

The Suffolk Division of Tourism Visitor Center will remain open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday, July 4, 2016.

All Suffolk City Libraries will be closed Monday, July 4, 2016.

The Suffolk Art Gallery will be closed Monday, July 4, 2016.

All Suffolk Parks & Recreation joint use recreation facilities will be closed Monday, July 4, 2016. All Planet Recreation programs and sites will be closed on Monday, July 4, 2016, including the Booker T. Washington, Creekside, Mack Benn Jr., Northern Shores, Oakland and Whaleyville Recreation Centers.

The East Suffolk Recreation Center and Whaleyville Recreation Center will be closed on Monday, July 4, 2016. The Suffolk Parks & Recreation Administrative Office will be closed on Monday, July 4, 2016.

Cypress Park Pool will be open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, July 4, 2016.

Three of Suffolk’s major parks (Lone Star Lakes, Sleepy Hole, and Bennett’s Creek) will remain open Monday, July 4, 2016; however, no park attendant will be on duty. Constant’s Wharf Park & Marina will be open on Monday, July 4, 2016 with no park attendant on duty. Constant’s Wharf Park & Marina will be the site for the Stars and Stripes Spectacular on Monday, July 4, 2016 with the park opening at 5:30 p.m. and the event scheduled to end at 9:30 p.m.

The Suffolk Executive Airport will remain open on Monday, July 4, 2016 with the terminal not open or manned.

Suffolk Transit will not operate on Monday, July 4, 2016

Suffolk Public Works Department will pick up trash as scheduled for the week. TFC Recycling will also run as scheduled for the week. The Suffolk Public Works Department reminds residents that trash must be placed at curbside no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection. The Southeastern Public Safety Authority (SPSA) Transfer Station in Suffolk and Regional Landfill will be closed on Monday, July 4, 2016.

Virginia Beach

There will be no trash and recycling collection on Monday, July 4

All Virginia Beach government administrative offices– closed Monday, July 4

The Virginia Beach Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Courts and Clerk’s Offices- closed Monday, July 4

The Holiday on the Roads

According to VDOT, most lane closures will be lifted on interstates and other major roads over the holiday weekend.

While Interstate-64 Widening is in progress in Newport News, James City County and York County, motorists planning a through-trip to Virginia Beach or the Outer Banks are encouraged to use Route 460 as an alternate route to avoid congestion.

I-64/I-264/I-564 HOV diamond lanes – HOV restrictions will be lifted on all HOV diamond lanes on Friday, July 1 and Monday, July 4.

I-64 reversible lanes − Lanes will operate on the regular schedule with no HOV restrictions on Friday, July 1 and Monday, July 4.

I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) – Local traffic to Virginia Beach is encouraged to use the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT) as an alternative to the HRBT. To Virginia Beach, take I-664 south to the MMMBT. Then take the Portsmouth/Norfolk exit (exit 15A) to I-264 east to Virginia Beach.

Travel to Outer Banks – Local traffic to the North Carolina Outer Banks should use I-664 and the MMMBT to save time. From I-664 south, take I-64 west to exit 292, Chesapeake Expressway/I-464/Route 17. Keep left to continue to the Chesapeake Expressway (Route 168), and take Nags Head/Great Bridge (exit 291B) to the Outer Banks.
