On Monday, September 5,  a large number of Americans will not be working. It’s Labor Day! Many city offices will be closed in observance of the national holiday. So, get out and enjoy yourself before the kids head back to school, just don’t plan on going to the library or the DMV.

Chesapeake

City offices: Closed Monday, September 5
Courts: Closed Monday, September 5
Libraries and community centers: Closed Sunday, September 4 AND Monday, September 5
Trash pick up: No change, as there is no regular Monday pick-ups

Garbage Collection: No recycling, refuse, bulk trash or yard waste collection on Sept. 5. Monday’s collection will be made Wednesday, Sept. 7

Yard Waste Site: Closed Monday, Sept. 5
Street Sweeping: No street sweeping Monday, Sept. 5

Solid waste collections (garbage, recycling & bulk waste): Will move forward by one day. Monday’s collections will take place on Tuesday, Tuesday’s on Wednesday, Wednesday’s on Thursday, and Thursday’s on Friday.
Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter: Open normal hours 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Norfolk

Norfolk City offices (Including City Hall, Commissioner of the Revenue & the City Treasurer): Closed Monday, September 5.
All Libraries: Closed Monday, September 5
Outdoor pools and beaches: OPEN Monday, September 5. All outdoor swimming pools and splash pads will close for the season Tuesday, Sept. 6 and beach lifeguards will go off-duty.
Other rec, parks and open space facilities, including indoor swimming pools and the Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center: Closed Monday, Sept. 5. They will reopen Tuesday.
Libraries: Closed Monday, September 5
Trash pick up: No change to collection service.
Bulk waste collection: Requests for Tuesday, Sept. 6 must be made BEFORE 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2

Portsmouth

City offices: Closed Monday, Sept. 5
Courts: Closed Monday, Sept. 5
Libraries and community centers: Closed Monday, Sept. 5
Trash pick up: No trash pickup Monday, September 5. Trash will be collected on Wednesday, September 7

Suffolk

City offices: Closed Monday, September 5
Suffolk Tourism Visitor Center will remain open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday, September 5, 2016.
Suffolk Art Gallery: Closed Monday, September 5, 2016.
Libraries: Closed Monday, September 5
Trash pick up: No change. Suffolk Public Works Department will pick up trash as scheduled next week.  TFC Recycling will also conduct their normal recycling collection routes. Suffolk Public Works Department reminds you that trash must be placed at curbside no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection. For more information on refuse collection, please call Public Works at 514-7630.
The Southeastern Public Safety Authority (SPSA) Suffolk Transfer Station will be open from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, September 5, 2016. The Regional Landfill will be closed on Monday, September 5, 2016.
Suffolk Parks & Recreation joint use recreation facilities: Closed Monday, September 5, 2016. The East Suffolk Recreation Center and Whaleyville Community Center will be closed on Monday, September 5, 2016. The Suffolk Parks & Recreation Administration Office will be closed on Monday, September 5, 2016.
Suffolk’s four major parks – Lone Star Lakes, Constant’s Wharf, Sleepy Hole, and Bennett’s Creek will remain open Monday, September 5, 2016; however, no park attendant will be on duty. Normal operations will resume Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at 8:30 a.m.
Cypress Park & Pool will close for the Summer season at 6 p.m., Sunday, September 4, 2016.
The Suffolk Executive Airport will remain open on Monday, September 5, 2016, however, the Terminal will not be manned.
Suffolk Transit: Closed on Monday, September 5, 2016. Operations will resume on Tuesday, September 6, 2016.

Virginia Beach

The following Virginia Beach facilities will be CLOSED Monday, Sept. 5 in observance of Labor Day:

The TCC/City Joint-Use Library will be closed Sept. 3, 4 and 5

The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts administrative offices and box office
