DescriptionItineraryHotelsPricesIncluded

The Tambopata National Reserve is the gateway to one of the world’s most remote and extraordinary Amazon Rainforest environments. This Amazon Rainforest tour experience will take you into the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve where you will experience the magnificent beauty, the sounds, the scents, the colors and the solitude of the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest in an exotic rainforest lodge. You will find yourself surrounded by a vast natural Amazon Rainforest environment, in a way you have never experienced nature and bird watching before.

The Tambopata National Reserve is part of a 3.7 million acre reserve in Peruvian Amazon Rainforest created in 1990 by the national government working in partnership with local grassroots and international conservation organizations to protect the biological diversity of the entire watersheds of the Tavara and the Candamo Rivers and most of the watershed of the Tambopata River. The declaration and the design of the Tambopata National Reserve include an underlying philosophy of sustainable development and conservation of the Amazon Rainforest resources. They believe in environmentally friendly Amazon Rainforest tours to help generate valuable profits for the Tambopata National Reserve.

Refugio Amazon Rainforest is a 24 bedroom lodge located ten minutes walking from the Tambopata River which opened in 2005. Its location two hours upriver from Posada Amazon Rainforest Lodge is ideal for stand alone three night experiences and for breaking the expeditions to and from Tambopata Research Center. Refugio Amazon Rainforest is built on a 200 hectare private reserve on the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve. It is becoming integrated to the communities of Brazil nut extractors that surround it, attempting to extend the benefits of ecotourism to the families that commit to the sustainable use of the forest within this buffer zone.

ITINERARY

DAY 1

At your arrival, you will be transfered from the airport to the Tambopata River port after a brief stop at Puerto Maldonado headquarters where you will be able to leave all unnecessary luggage for this journey. Begin to experience the enchantment of the Amazon Rainforest as you take a 2 and a half hour boat ride along the Tambopata River to arrive to the Refugio Amazon Rainforest Lodge in the Tambopata National Reserve.

Caiman searches

You will be out at the Tambopata river’s edge at night, scanning the shores with headlamps and flashlights to catch the red gleams of reflection from caiman eyes.

Overnight in Refugio Amazon Rainforest Lodge.
(BL, D)

DAY 2

Condenado Lake

An hour and a half walk at dawn from Refugio Amazon Rainforest Lodge takes you to Condenado Lake within the Tambopata National Reserve. You will then paddle around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of five giant river otters and caimans.

Farm Visit and Ethnobotanical Garden

Five minutes down river from the lodge lies a farm owned and managed by charismatic Don Manuel from the neighbouring community of Condenado. He grows a variety of popular and unknown Amazon crops.

Brazil Nut Trail and Camp

A few minutes hike from Refugio Amazon Rainforest Lodge in the Tambopata National Reserve is a beautiful old growth patch of Brazil Nut forest that has been harvested for decades (if not centuries) where the precarious remains of a camp used two months a year by Brazil Nut gatherers can still be experienced. We will be demonstrating the whole process of the rainforest only sustainably harvested product from collection through transportation to drying.

Night Walk

You will have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.

Overnight in Refugio Amazon Rainforest Lodge.

(B, L, D)

DAY 3

Parakeet clay lick

From a blind you will see parakeets descend on most clear days to ingest the clay on a bank. Species such as Dusky headed and Cobalt winged Parakeet descend at this clay lick. You will visit the lick at dawn, when parrots are most active.

Mammal Clay Lick

Twenty minutes walking from Refugio Amazon Rainforest Lodge is a peccary clay lick. These wild rain forest pigs show up in herds of five to twenty individuals to eat clay in the late morning.

Canopy Tower

A thirty minute walk from Refugio Amazon Rainforest Lodge leads to the 25 meter scaffolding canopy tower. The tower has been built upon high ground, therefore increasing your horizon of the continues primary forest extending out towards the Tambopata National Reserve.

Tambopata National Reserve Lecture

Nightly lectures prepared by the staff of Refugio Amazon Rainforest Lodge cover conservation threats, opportunities and projects in the Tambopata National Reserve.

Overnight in Refugio Amazon Rainforest Lodge.

(B, L, D)

DAY 4

Refugio Amazonas (Standard Lodge)

The Refugio Amazonas is a 32-bedroom lodge four hours from the Puerto Maldonado airport. It is ideal for soft adventurers and families, and has a rainforest trail designed especially for children, the only one in the Peruvian Amazon.

Because it takes a half-day to travel from Puerto Maldonado to Refugio Amazonas, we recommend visitors spend three nights to make their trip worthwhile. Travelers to the Tambopata Research Center also stop off at the Refugio on the way to and from the TRC.

Refugio Amazonas is located in a 200-hectare private reserve within the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve. Rainforest Expeditions is partnering with local families, who sustainably harvest Brazil nuts from the surrounding rainforest, to ensure that they share in the benefits of ecotourism.

Tambopata Research Center (Standard Lodge)

The Tambopata Research Center (TRC) is one of the most remote rainforest lodges in South America, offering adventurous travelers an outstanding chance to engage with the natural wonders of the Amazon. It is a comfortable 18 bedroom lodge which was built more than twenty years ago (and rebuilt only 5 years ago) with the object of lodging tourists and researchers alike and of protecting the adjacent macaw clay lick. Because of its remote location in uninhabited wilderness housing stable populations of endangered wildlife, the small scale of its infrastructure and operations and the presence of researchers and naturalist guides, Tambopata Research Center is an excellent headquarters for in depth explorations of Amazonian nature and wildlife.

The TRC’s isolated location, inside an uninhabited area of the Tambopata National Reserve and next to the Bahajua-Sonene National Park, means that the rainforest ecosystem around it remains pristine, while the populations of wild animals are all at carrying capacity. Much groundbreaking macaw conservation research has been carried out from the TRC and you will likely have the chance during your stay to talk with macaw biologists, ecologists and other experts staying at the TRC while they do fieldwork.
