It was a night of romance on this week’s episode of The Mindy Project, where Mindy Lahiri got herself into some hot water when she set up Danny’s mom Annette (Rhea Perlman) on a blind date. However, that didn’t stop Mindy from rocking a series of bold ensembles featuring some eye-popping patterns.

Mindy grows tired of Danny’s mom constantly interrupting their alone time after she walks in on them taking a bath together. For the post-incident scene, costume designer Salvador Perez dressed the star in a grunge-inspired look. “Her look was overtly sexual when she was trying not be,” says Perez of Mindy’s green plaid chiffon shirt that she wears unbuttoned over a navy lace nightie.

Annette’s constant presence leads Mindy to set her up with a doctor from the hospital, hoping that will take her focus off of Mindy and Danny’s relationship. Without Danny’s knowledge, she sets up the date and even lets her borrow a snazzy outfit (that includes Baublebar earrings Mindy has actually worn on the show before!) for the event. Perez says it was tricky to think about what could possibly be in Mindy’s closet that Annette, who is “conservative and frugal” would wear, but that the pink sweater was just right. When Danny discovers what Mindy has done, he confronts her while she’s wearing another plaid look—a bright red Equipment crewneck sweatshirt with black-and-red Norma Kamali leggings (above). “This is Mindy’s version of a casual afterwork look. She’s a big fan of plaid. Anytime I can put her in plaid, she loves it,” Perez shares.

Her next idea? To set Annette up on a date with Morgan (Ike Barinholtz) to turn her off from dating altogether. Surprise, surprise, her plan backfires and the pair strike up a real romance. Mindy finds out and rushes to stop Danny from discovering this too in one chic look: a DKNY houndstooth pencil skirt, green floral print Jonathan Saunders top, Saint Laurent cap-toe heels, and a quilted black leather jacket. “This is a classic mixed-prints look for Mindy,” Perez says. “The tonal quality of these two pieces worked so beautifully together, and the graphic pumps added something extra.”

Later, Mindy—dressed in a black Ted Baker dress with embellished pink cap sleeves (above)—and Danny stage an intervention with Annette that somehow turns into a double-date with Morgan. Perez’s key to making this dress more Mindy’s style? “We bought two dresses and took the crystals from one of them to add extra crystals to the one she actually wore in the scene,” he says. “It makes it a more over-the-top look.”

We’ll be chatting with Perez every week about our favorite looks from The Mindy Project, so be sure to check back in next week!
