Sensory bins are great fun for toddlers and preschoolers, it will keep them busy for hours, it is also great introduction to sensory exploration.  If you haven’t tried one, make time to do so, you will not be sorry with the results.

To begin, gather the following materials:

15 – 20 pounds of white rice

white vinegar

food coloring

several large plastic bags

1 large container with a lid to hold the rice

First, decide what color you would like to make. If you are going to make sensory bins thought the year, you could dye all of the rice at once, or do them as needed.

Next fill each bag with 5 cups of rice as well as 2 – 3 tablespoons of vinegar and around 30 – 40 drops of food coloring (depending on color, the darker colors need more food coloring).

Seal the bag and mix and shake until the colors are evenly distributed. (This is a cool thing to let the kids be involved with)

Next, spread the rice mixture out on a baking sheet, this will allow them to dry better and it will dramatically reduce the vinegar smell from strong and overbearing to subtle.
