In the picture above, we have a very modern living room with a contemporary fireplace, sofa, white chair and white painted timber rafter ceiling in the attic.

Attics and lofts often create an abundance of additional home space that many home owners never take full advantage of. Usually left as a place to store old boxes of things we no longer need or use but can’t bear to throw out however a loft or an attic can be so much more than that, especially if you take into account the many loft room decorating ideas open to you.

Whilst access can be an issue, you can always overcome these minor challenges with the right focus, dedication and determination, create simple (or even not so simple) access by using either a retracting ladder, a spiral staircase, or go all the way and develop a real set of stairs and make it a feature room in your home.

The next thing for consideration is usually the head height in the space. If you can’t stand up anywhere in the area, then you do have an area that probably isn’t practically usable as an attic or loft space. On the other hand, if you could feasibly walk the length of the room and the roof or ceiling isn’t making you crouch or squat, then you are onto a winner. The rest is up to your imagination and your potential budget. Remember that usually anything is possible with the right funds, it just comes down to how much you’re willing to spend and how much you need the room. Whatever the situation, creating an attic or loft in your home and decorating it in innovative and creative ways will not only add additional usable areas for your family, but is also likely to add additional value to your home as well.

Take a look through our gallery of attic and loft room decorating ideas and see if doesn’t inspire your creative desire to make the most of that waste of space in your ceiling. You might even surprise yourself with what could be possible.
