The Hanuman Chalisa is a Hindu devotional sacred hymn addressed to Lord Hanuman. It is traditionally believed to have been authored by 16th-century poet Goswami Tulsidas in the Awadhi language (a dialect of the Hindi dialect continuum), and is his best known sacred text apart from the Ramcharitmanas.

”Chalisa” is derived from “chalis”, which means the number 40 in Hindi, as the Hanuman Chalisa has 40 verses (ignoring the couplets at the beginning and at the end).

Hanuman is a monkey god. He is a great devotee and noble hero of Rama (avatar of Vishnu) of the Ramayana.

He is a provider of courage, hope, knowledge, devotion and intellect. He is pictured as a robust monkey holding a gada (mace), which signifies bravery and having a picture of Lord Rama tattooed on his chest which is a sign of his adoration to Lord Rama.

He is also called Mahaveera (the great hero) or Bajarangbali or Pavan-suta (son of air).
