Just outside the CBD, eat, drink, and relax your way through some of the best cafes, restaurants, green open spaces, and entertainment that Adelaide has to offer.
HIGHLIGHTS
There’s more than enough cafes, restaurants, and bars in Unley and Goodwood to keep you busy.
Unley Road has standouts Rosey’s and A Mother’s Milk, while Goodwood Road is home to the retro-styled Ginger’s, long-time favourite Brown Dog Café, new hot spot Pickle in the Middle (the name alone should be enough to go), and speciality vegan dessert café, Eggless. It might be eggless, but it’s certainly not lacking in taste. Try their tasting platter for four miniature versions of their current dessert range—and we won’t blame you if you go back for seconds.
King William Road has a slightly more upmarket feel and is better known as a dinner destination. Try local standouts like The Pot Food and Wine for some excellent modern Australian fare, or Ichitaro Japanese Restaurant for fine dining, Japanese-style. Your coffee needs are covered, too, with Lightbulb Café serving you great coffee and juices (try the Edison for a refreshing sip), and delivering simple, seasonal food.
Adelaide has plenty of health-focussed cafes, and Nutrition Republic in Goodwood, and Pollen 185 on King William Road, are no exception. Grab a smoothie, juice or raw treat from either, and feel healthy from the inside out.
If you just want to sit, relax, and enjoy a film, there’s no shortage of art deco cinemas in Adelaide. But Goodwood’s Capri Theatre is the only one that is fully equipped with a giant pipe organ – the kind that was originally used to accompany silent films. Offering both current and cult films, you’ll be sure to find something that tickles your fancy.
COMMUNITY FACILITIES
The local council – the City of Unley – provides several community spaces. The Unley Community Centres provides a welcoming community space and offers arts and crafts sessions, health programmes, leisure activities, and more. The Goodwood Community Centre also offers family law services and mediation, for those who need it.
For an extra space to get stuck into the books, head to the Goodwood and Unley Civic Libraries. Both offer a wide collection, wireless access, and free Wi-Fi.
The Unley Swimming Centre is open seasonally from September to May, and starts at just $7 a session for adults, with coaching sessions offered to swimmers of all levels. Don’t feel like swimming? When you want to lace up your runners and go for a jog, head to Unley Oval and run some laps instead.
There are several medical centres nearby too, with the Hughes Clinic offering minor surgical procedures, counselling, and pre-employment medicals, and the Kings Park Clinic covering all your medical needs, with skin checks and x-rays to boot.
FREE & FRUGAL
If the weather’s sunny and you feel like getting outdoors, grab your friends, pack a picnic, and head to one of the area’s green open spaces. Take your bike for a spin around the cycling paths in Orphanage Park, or head to Heywood Park for a barbecue and some downtime in one of Adelaide’s urban oases. On the way, be sure to pick up a coffee at Pickle in the Middle for just $3.50.
Over the summer months, the City of Unley holds free outdoor cinema events, so be sure to head to the City of Unley’s website to see what’s on near you.
For a bargain night out you can’t go past the Earl of Leicester. Get a pint for $6 or a house wine for $5.50 during happy hour, which runs from 4pm-6pm, Monday through Thursday. On Tuesdays you can pick up 50c buffalo chicken wings, and Wednesday bend your brain at their free Quiz Meister pub trivia. Happy hour is also in full swing at The Unley, where you can get a $6.50 pint, and $10 pizzas all day on Fridays.
