Funcom is keeping the Conan Exiles news churning. The publisher announced Early Access release dates Tuesday for both the Xbox One and PC. It also debuted a third trailer that impresses with the summoning and impending battle between two Hyborian gods.
PC owners will get Conan Exiles first on January 31, 2017 via Steam Early Access. This will be followed with an Xbox One release in Spring 2017 into the Xbox Game Preview program. There is no release date announcement for the PlayStation 4 yet. Sony does not have an Early Access-style program for the console, but the game will eventually come to the platform per a Twitter post from the developer.
It will be interesting to see how Conan Exiles looks and performs on the Xbox One. ARK: Survival Evolved falls in the same open-world survival genre as Funcom’s efforts and it has had an up and down ride since it entered the Xbox Game Preview program in January 2015. The biggest down in many players eyes is the poor framerate performance and 720p graphics. There’s no word yet on what Funcom is targeting for Conan Exiles.
“We’re releasing the game as an Early Access title in order to develop the game together with our community,” Funcom explained in a developer blog.
“Fans of both Conan the Barbarian and survival games will be essential in helping us create the best open world survival game we can. Releasing in Early Access does come with some caveats. Some features and content will obviously be more complete and polished than others, and the game will see both big and small changes during the Early Access period. Once we’re closer to Early Access launch our full development roadmap will be unveiled.”
Funcom went on to emphasize Conan Exiles is not an MMORPG like its Age of Conan title.
“The open-world survival genre is ripe for Conan’s conquest,” says Game Director Joel Bylos in an accompanying press release.
“If there ever was a world that can truly test your strength and skill, it is the brutal and savage world of Conan the Barbarian. ‘Conan Exiles’ is not just an empty sandbox, it is a world rich in history where you must discover the secrets of ancient civilizations as you struggle to build your own.”
Conan Exiles comes with all the trappings of an open-world survival game. Players will be able to gather resources to build tools, weapons, and bases in a large open-world based on the harsh land of Hyboria from the Conan franchise.
Players will have the option to join multiplayer games on both public and private servers, or they can do it alone in a single-player mode. There will be both PVP and PVE servers, but there is a definite PVP focus with players able to sacrifice enemies to the gods for added power.
The sacrifices and summoning an avatar of one of the Hyborian gods was shown in the trailer to showcase what makes Conan Exiles stand apart from other games in the genre. The colossus-like avatar made quick work of both buildings and walls as it strode across the landscape to face off against the snake avatar of a rival god.
The game also features human NPCs that players can kill to take over towns, and they will have to defend their fledgling bases and villages against. Conan Exiles introduces the Purge System to keep a server from becoming stale. The system will occasionally introduce invading NPC armies to the game world that will attack players and their structures.
Alternatively, players can make NPCs their slaves through the Thrall system. These enslaved NPCs can then be made to work for you or your tribe to gather resources and such.
Other twists include graphic fatality kills during combat, combat options with multiple different attacks based on the weapon used, and a 53 km world size with varied biomes. Biomes confirmed so far include highlands, snowy mountains, jungle, forest, swamp, and “more.”
