The official Android Nougat update for Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge won’t be available until next year, at least, according to reports. But there’s a way for Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge owners to experience the most advanced Android iteration as early as now.

Although it’s via an unofficial method, there’s a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge firmware update based on Android 7.1.1 Android Nougat that owners can opt to install on their handset. According to Team Android, a custom ROM was developed using the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 firmware with additional features and UI elements found on Google Pixel. Aptly called the N7 Pixel Edition, this custom firmware update is specifically compatible with the global variant of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, which bears the model number SM-G935F.

Make sure that you have the correct model as installing a custom ROM to any incompatible unit could permanently damage the device. To accurately identify your Galaxy S7 Edge, simply head to the Settings menu and then tap the About Device or About Phone option. The model number should be listed on the screen alongside other technical information regarding the device.

Furthermore, downloading the Android 7.1.1 Nougat firmware’s installation files to update the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge will take up about 1.10 GB of the phone’s memory space. The custom ROM contains Google Pixel’s look and feel and system optimizations. It is also “heavily debloated” and “deknoxed,” according to the report.

Take note, though, that installing a custom ROM to a Samsung smartphone is unofficial and will automatically void all the active warranties the unit have. S7 Edge owners should also be aware that the Samsung KIES desktop tool will not be able to detect the handset anymore once the N7 Pixel Edition ROM is installed. Moreover, any installation errors during the update process can cause potential damage to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, thus, proper precautionary measures are advised.

One of the simplest pre-requisites Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge owners need to follow is to ascertain that the battery is fully-charged or, at least, it’s running in 80% to 85% battery power. This is to prevent the smartphone from automatically powering down due to battery drain while installing the N7 Pixel Edition firmware update as it could permanently brick the device.

Installing a customized ROM update on Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge also means that all the data and settings stored on the device will most likely be wiped out, that’s why creating a proper backup is highly essential. Recovery tools such as TWRP or ClockWorkMod are not only important for the backup as they will also be used to flash the custom firmware on the S7 Edge.

For newbies when it comes to installing an unofficial firmware, don’t hesitate to visit the Team Android’s post linked above for the comprehensive installation guide. Also, if you’ve already decided to update your S7 Edge using the N7 Pixel Edition firmware, the download link of the necessary update files for the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge are also provided in the post.

If adventure is your style, installing the customized ROM on your S7 Edge is most likely the road you would want to take. But if you are one of the S7 Edge owners who want to stay on the safe side but still wish to experience Android Nougat earlier, you can try to register in the ongoing Galaxy Beta Program that allows public testers to try out and explore the beta version of the Android 7.0 Nougat OS. It is currently available for Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge owners in the U.S., the U.K., South Korea and China but, most probably, all the slots were already filled up.
