If a paper recently published by he International Journal of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Research is to be believed, then there is a new hope for obese people who have lost all their aspirations of getting healthy and thin. The study emerging out showed that Forskolin has little or no negative side effects.

According to a piece by Wholefoodsmagazine Sabinsa Corporation and Sami Labs founder Muhammed Majeed, Ph.D., lead researcher, concentrated on his company’s patented Coleus forskohlii extract (ForsLean) conducted the experiment on rats.

In the experiment, Groups of five male and female rats were given 10% forskolin (as Forslean) at 2,000 mg/kg body weight and were kept under minute observation for two weeks for any sign of toxicity.

In a separate 28-day arm of the study, daily doses of 100, 300 and 1,000 mg/kg body were administered in the body of rats. Last, in another segment, groups of 20 male and 20 female rats were given 10% forskolin for 180 days at daily dose levels of 500 mg/kg and 1,000 mg/kg body weight.

After all that tests, it was seen that not a single rat lost its life and no major changes in hematology and serum biochemistry values were found between the active and control groups. In addition to this, the changes in body weights of rats were normal and no organ damage was discovered and not a trace of toxicity was found.

The authors stated:

“In conclusion, the ‘No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL)’ of CF extract was determined to be above 1,000 mg/kg b.wt/day.

Authority nutritionreports forskolin stimulates the release of stored fat from fat cells which is similar to the burning of fat when the human body required energy. But, on its own the release of fats cannot account for weight loss. It needs to be accompanied by calorie deficit.

Putting it simply, for a person to lose weight, the expense of energy by the body must exceed the intake of energy. Though forskolin does not work this way, forskolin has been found to promote fat loss while preserving muscle mass.

In a randomized controlled trials, 30 overweight and obese men were divided in two groups, the forskolin group and the placebo group.

Forskolin group: 15 men were supplemented with 250 mg of Coleus forskohliiextract (10% forskolin) twice a day for 12 weeks.

Placebo group: 15 men took the same amount of dummy pills (placebo).

Compared to the placebo group, men who took forskolin lost a significantly larger amount of body fat.

Besides Weight Loss, Forskolin has wide range of other applications.

Forskolin supplements can widen the air passages in the lungs and thus helping to relieve asthma. It also increases bone mineral density and thus lowering the risk of osteoporosis. Forskolin also stimulates testosterone formation and promotes the maintenance of muscle mass.

When ingested orally, forskolin is also used to treat allergies, skin conditions such aseczema and psoriasis, obesity, painful menstrual periods, irritable bowel syndrome(IBS), urinary tract infections (UTI), bladder infections, advanced cancer, blood clots, sexual problems in men, trouble sleeping (insomnia), and convulsions.

Forskolin drops are also used in eyes to treat glaucoma.

Froscolin is a nascent drug and not a lot of research has been done but the preliminary researches done suggest the prolonged use of the drug may induce rapid or irregular heart beat and vague traces of embryo related toxicity has been reported in case of some froscolin derrivatives.
