Released less than a month ago, Mortal Kombat X has a huge fandom that continues to grow rapidly. Available on Xbox One, PC, and PS4, Mortal Kombat X features some of the classic Mortal Kombat characters from the Midway Games original release back in 1992, and it appeals to modern gamers and retro fans alike across a broad range of gaming platforms. Mortal Kombat X manufacturers have assured fans that the game will be released on Xbox 360 and PS3 later in 2015.

A glitch, discovered by a Reddit user with the handle BertrandsMate, allows players to unlock free costumes and character skins, which would normally have to be earned by undertaking challenges in the Mortal Kombat X companion mobile app. The glitch allows players to steal – or, more accurately, copy – new skins for various Mortal Kombat X characters that have already been legitimately earned by players who are at the top end of the ranking leaderboard, Yibada reported.

The steps are surprisingly easy, which confirms suspicions that this is a true glitch and not an Easter egg, which are usually more sophisticated and well hidden.

The method has been verified to work on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

Here’s how to unlock costumes and skins the easy way, thanks to the astute (or perhaps lucky) Mortal Kombat Kommunity Reddit user BertrandsMate.

Browse through the worldwide Mortal Kombat X leaderboards.

Using the list of Overall Leaders as a guide, which shows winning streaks as well as wins and losses, choose one of the top players.

Browse through the player’s Kombat history in detail.

Exit the leaderboards, and when asked if you would like to change factions, click either decline or accept. Your choice does not matter, but it is essential that you click one of these options rather than exiting the game without making a choice.

Load into a new fight and the unlocked character skins will be made available to you. Unlocked skins and costumes will permanently remain in your account.

The leaderboards change constantly, so players are encouraged to try the method on as many different top ranking players as they like until they unlock all of the costumes and skins that they are looking for.

Design N Trend’s Christopher Groux reported that users have been delighted to unlock the Injustice Scorpion and Ninja Johnny Cage character skins. The Injustice Scorpion character skin would normally require the completion of 100 multiplayer ladders before it would be legitimately unlocked. It makes sense that players are keen to try this method to see if they can unlock these mobile bonuses without having to complete that many ladder challenges.

This glitch is also music to the ears of Mortal Kombat X fans that don’t have access to a mobile device.

News of the glitch and its high success rates among fans took the Twitter universe by storm over the past few days.
