ASHEVILLE, NC - Moogfest, the 5 day festival with a lineup packing what Rolling Stone calls “eclectic firepower”, announces free concerts and programming. The music and innovation festival, taking place in Asheville, NC from April 23-27th, is dedicated to the innovative spirit of Bob Moog, the inventive founder of Moog Music. The festival brings musical, cultural, artistic and technological luminaries from around the globe to Asheville, including world-renowned music acts such as Kraftwerk, M.I.A., and Pet Shop Boys as nighttime headliners and innovative thinkers as part of the daytime programming, including Joseph Paradiso, head of the MIT Media Lab, Futurama creator David X. Cohen, and the brightest minds from Google.

In keeping with Bob Moog’s spirit of community and in an effort to ensure that Asheville and the surrounding region have access to the landmark speakers, performers and experiences the festival brings to Western North Carolina for the first time, Moogfest is opening up many of these unprecedented opportunities to area residents free of charge. Schedule of free Moogfest programming available here.

Daytime programming taps into an exciting array or artists, designers, inventors, and futurists, with free programming including an electronic instrument pop-up shop, daily music production workshops, immersive durational performances, a one of a kind theremin exhibit with performances by Dorit Chrysler, artistic and architectural installations as well as mobile applications for free use and viewing. Among the contributors are The Media Arts Project (MAP), cultivators of innovative arts & technology in western North Carolina; senior students from the Clemson School of Architecture; and Odd Division, a creative studio for emerging media.

In addition to being a music and innovation conference, Moogfest is working closely with the city of Asheville to expand on the city’s entrepreneurial culture by programming creative and technological resources that are free and open to the public, including a modular marketplace with workshops and demonstrations, as well as a tech expo and job fair focused on local companies.

MODULAR MARKETPLACE

Moogfest’s free Modular Marketplace is electronic pop-up shop showcasing the latest and greatest from a lineup of innovative instrument makers, curated by Austin, TX electronics shop SwitchedOn.

Boutique electronics, experimental effects and modern modular synthesizers will create an interactive exhibition in which the public can engage with new musical devices and their designers.

The Modular Marketplace will host daily demonstrations, workshops and sound experiments from the engineers that are shaping the sounds of tomorrow, as well as a free week-long clinic on electronic music production. All events in the Modular Marketplace are free to the public.

IMMERSIVE IMPROVISATIONS: DURATIONAL PERFORMANCES AS SONIC INSTALLATIONS:

Pure sonic immersion will take place inside of the CCCD Gallery over three days of Moogfest. Each free performance will unfold over a span of two to four hours, where anything can happen.

On Thursday, Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner and Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox explore sounds solely on Moog pedals.

On Friday, LCD Soundsystem’s Gavin Russom explores the outer limits of Moog synthesizers.

On Saturday, Dan Deacon creates new compositions from Moogs across all platforms, from hardware to software, pedals to apps.

Each performance is enveloped by an immersive visual installation with films, projections and art by Hisham Bharoocha and Jesse Hlebo.

ODD HARMONICS, THEREMINS BY FRANÇOIS CHAMBARD OF UM PROJECT:

Custom made sculptural Theremins, designed and built by François Chambard, at once sculptures, instruments and design objects, available for the public to play. With daily performances by Dorit Chrysler.

MOOGFEST CONDUCTAR, BY ODD DIVISION:

An immersive augmented-reality installation layered on top of the entire city of Asheville invites visitors to wander the city and conduct a generative audio-visual world through movement and their neurological response to the environment. Inspired by the psychogeographical concept of “Dérive,” the installation runs on a mobile app connected to a brainwave sensor. As festival goers drift from one venue to the next, they will collectively compose new music with the electrical activity of their brains (EEG data). This music and the corresponding visual world will exist only where it was created and through mobile devices. Every minute of Moogfest the immersive world will evolve, both sonically and visually. The entire city becomes a virtual canvas to compose and explore through each footstep. Download the iPhone app at www.conductar.com or through the app store under Conductar: Moogfest and pick up a brainwave sensor from Moogfest staff to experience the full installation.

NEW MEDIA ART EXHIBIT POWERED BY ALOFT HOTELS:

Over the last 50 years, Bob Moog and his company Moog Music have created technology that has given artists the ability to create and express themselves in new and limitless ways. Moogfest honors this spirit of innovation through a five day festival that highlights the intersection of art, music, performance and technology.

In October of last year Moogfest and The Media Arts Project (MAP) issued an invitation to artists, designers, architects, engineers, innovators, scientists, and students to submit proposals for juried selection to contribute to Moogfest 2014.

Design teams were asked to propose a freestanding, rapidly deployable temporary structure or installation that embodies the interdisciplinary philosophy and innovation that Moog exemplifies. Designs had to enhance the experience of the user by engaging multimedia and multi-sensory experiences of sound, structure, materiality, light and form. The objective was for each entry to emphasize the intersection of art and technology.

Over 50 submissions were received, and after careful judgment, less than 10 were accepted with two of the pieces accepted being from Asheville.

To bring this new media art exhibit to life Moogfest has partnered with Aloft Hotels.

“Aloft Hotels has passion for innovation and shaping the guest experience through design–led initiatives,” said Brian McGuinness, Senior Vice President, Aloft Hotels. “MoogFest’s vision of highlighting the intersection of art, music and technology is brought to life through the New Media Art Exhibit and makes this a natural partnership for Aloft.”

These installations will be located in the Moogfest footprint running along Lexington Avenue toward Broadway and the Moog Factory, turning the street into an interactive art playground.

CLEMSON SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE:

As part of their spring project, Clemson’s senior architecture students collaborated on a placemaking design that combines Asheville’s unique downtown landscape and the temporary nature of a festival. Students have developed a temporary urban space for Asheville residents and festival goers. Part of Moogfest’s free outdoor programming, the space is designed to connect festival goers and the citizens of Asheville to each other and to the events happening in the many venues happening throughout the city during Moogfest.
