In its fourth year, Hopscotch Music Festival—North Carolina’s biggest and most diverse music festival—is pleased to announce the schedule for its annual party in downtown Raleigh, N.C., Sept. 5–7, 2013. Nearly 175 bands will fill 15 venues this September, bringing together some of the most noteworthy artists working today in a variety of genres—from hip-hop to indie rock, from electronic noise to electronic dance music, from old-time music to heavy metal. Hopscotch combines the best of North Carolina’s highly regarded scene with bands from around the world, creating a weekend that’s local and global, proud of the place it calls home but connected to the world around it, too.

THE 2013 HOPSCOTCH SCHEDULE

In just more than two months, Hopscotch will once again commandeer downtown Raleigh for what Spin has called “one of the best and most eclectic music festivals in America.” See the 175-band schedule and start your planning here: http://hopscotchmusicfest.com/schedule.

On THURSDAY, SEPT. 5, a group of artists responsible for some of the best record releases in 2013—including KURT VILE, MARNIE STERN, GROUPER, WOLF EYES, PHARMAKON, PURLING HISS and LAPALUX—highlight a stacked evening of club shows around the city. Tokyo’s legendary MERZBOW, Hopscotch’s 2013 Improviser in Residence, will play a rare stateside engagement, while local heroes THE ROSEBUDS will perform Sade’s Love Deluxe in its entirety. Other highlights include more rare action by OBLIVIANS and WOLD, a dance party led by MATTHEW DEAR, and Hopscotch’s only artist-curated bill of 2013, anchored by CHATHAM COUNTY LINE.

On FRIDAY, SEPT. 6, Hopscotch hosts the first of two headlining nights in Raleigh City Plaza. One of hip-hop’s best live performers and creative forces, BIG BOI, headlines a bill that also features Baltimore’s party starters FUTURE ISLANDS and Triangle favorites GROSS GHOST. In the festival’s 14 club venues, the stellar hip-hop continues with EARL SWEATSHIRT and ACTION BRONSON at Lincoln Theatre, new indie charmers LOCAL NATIVES at Memorial Auditorium, and grindcore greats PIG DESTROYER at Kennedy Theater. PERE UBU, WAXAHATCHEE, RYAN HEMSWORTH, and SUUNS headline bills elsewhere. And in Fletcher Opera Theater, MT. MORIAH closes the night by performing their entire discography from start to finish.

On SATURDAY, SEPT. 7, the festival returns to Raleigh City Plaza for Hopscotch’s second headlining show: Psychedelic British gospel-rock legends SPIRITUALIZED share top billing with THE BREEDERS, who perform their ’90s masterpiece Last Splash in its entirety. Raleigh up-and-comers THE LOLLIPOPS open. JOHN CALE, co-founder of The Velvet Underground and dazzling composer, appears in the Triangle for the first time in decades at Memorial Auditorium and metal lords SLEEP headline a stellar metal bill at Lincoln Theatre. To top it off, LOW, PISSED JEANS, CALIFONE, MATMOS, ADULT. , and DOUG PAISLEY join RICHARD YOUNGS, EVOKEN, TORRES, RITON, and HOLLY HERNDON on this fully stacked closing night.

“One of the ten essential summer festivals in North America 2012”—Pitchfork

“In Raleigh Thursday through Saturday, it was all about an extraordinarily cool roster of bands. With streets cordoned off throughout the downtown area, thousands of people … wandered among ten participating music venues, creating a Mardi Gras-like atmosphere.” —Rolling Stone

“Hopscotch: perfection, indeed” —The News & Observer, Raleigh

“Hopscotch Music Festival is fast becoming Raleigh’s cultural center of gravity.” —Raleigh Public Record

“The festival is like a younger cousin to SXSW or CMJ. … However, where the enormity of cities like Austin or New York make it all but impossible to jump between bars without spending your entire festival en route, Hopscotch is small enough that skipping between shows actually makes sense. Plus, roaming the streets between can’t-miss acts leaves lots of time to run into new friends, get sidetracked into unexpected shows or end up on a random adventure. And there was plenty of that.” —Mountain Xpress, Asheville

“Hopscotch Music Festival is one of the best and weirdest music festivals in America.” —Spin
