Indonesia Stopped Indian Convict Execution at Last Minute
On Friday Indonesia cancelled the execution of Indian drug convict after senior officials intervened hours before the execution. Indonesia executed other 4 convicts on Thursday including 3 foreign nationals for drug crimes. The Indonesia firing squad said there are another 10 convicts to be executed later.
Gurdip Singh was to be executed at 10:00 pm on Thursday night but at the last minute due to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj intervention seems to save his life for now. The family was in sorrow until phone from Indonesia on Friday morning at 7:45 am that change them to happiness. Sushma Swaraj official shared information on her twitter page.
Indian Ambassador in Indonesia has informed me that Gurdip Singh whose execution was fixed for last night, has not been executed.

Gurdip talked to his wife later at 8:45pm and asked for well being of everyone in the family. His wife Kulwinder Kaur attended the phone call. He thanked Indian government for efforts take to save him. He also said he will go back to jail and has hoped to come back soon.
He has teen age younger son and daughter who are praying or his safe return. They were so happy and have hopes that their father will return home.
Gurdip was arrested in 2004 and since he is in jail for the charges of smuggling 300 gm of heroin. He was sentence to death
His family believes that he is an innocent who was landed in Indonesia on the way to New Zealand. They say travel agencies hold sown his passport and forced him to do drug smuggling. He was working as carpenter at Libya before moving to Indonesia.
Indian embassy had asked Indonesia government to look at the legal options and Gurdip has the right to appeal to President of Indonesia for mercy.
Indonesia has the strict rules against drugs. The capital punishment is legal in the country. It is enforced in grave cases like murder or drug trafficking.
