Subaru has launched its stylish sixth generation All-Wheel Drive Legacy, with a long list of prestige features in what many will consider to be a large sized medium car. Twenty six years after its New Zealand debut, Legacy offers outstanding packaging in a premium, high-strength body. The Legacy is a grand touring car, offering an ideal combination of comfort, safety and sporty high-quality road performance - regardless of weather or road conditions, thanks to its All-Wheel Drive ability.
Legacy is competitively priced to gain an increased share of the sedan market, with the 2.5i retailing for $39,990 and the 3.6RS at $49,990. “This biggest ever Legacy is now a compelling technology package with a raft of safety and luxury features. Combined with Subaru’s unique Symmetrical All Wheel Drive it presents great value for money.” said Wallis Dumper, the Managing Director of Subaru of New Zealand. “We know there are many Kiwis facing the challenge of change in the next few years as they try to find an alternative to their large rear wheel drive Australian car.”
“Our guess is that not all of them will want a truck or front wheel drive car and this all new Legacy may truly surprise many with spaciousness, six cylinder boxer engine and stylish design all with the inbuilt practicality of our dependable all-wheel drive,” said Mr. Dumper. “From the bach or the back blocks to that quiet boat ramp, all are within reach in this Legacy and they look very cool in the company car park too.”
Along with Outback, Legacy is also the safest ever Subaru - achieving a five-star rating for occupant safety from the independent Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), with a total score of 35.99 out of a maximum possible 37. All current models in the Subaru range have a five star safety rating. Every new Legacy is also equipped with the new 3rd generation award-winning EyeSight® driver assist system, which can help avoid accidents or reduce impact.
All Legacy’s are more efficient too – 2.5i has reduced fuel consumption by 7.6 per cent in the combined cycle and emissions by 8.2 per cent, while the 3.6 RS is 3.9 per cent more efficient in the combined cycle and has 5.0 per cent lower emissions. Fuel efficiency is also aided by a 10 per cent improvement in aerodynamic performance. Great visibility and cavernous cabin space combine with world-class safety and a classy sculptured body, to inspire confidence at every level.
The 2015 Legacy has a sophisticated, stylish exterior for a great on-road presence, while the cabin has a huge focus on detail quality, tactile surfaces, switchgear, space, quietness and comfort. The active grille shutter – an innovative feature that aids fuel efficiency and aerodynamic performance is fitted to Legacy 2.5i variants, which also feature automatic stop – start. An all-new infotainment system provides new levels of on-board information and entertainment with speech recognition across a wide range of key functions. The 3.6 RS also has satellite navigation and TRAFFIC Information, with traffic updates and re-routing recommendations for the country’s major urban areas – Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga – Mt Maunganui, Wellington and Christchurch.
The new generation EyeSight® has new driver-assist features to avoid accidents or reduce impact, including brake light recognition, pre-Collision Steering Assist. Eyesight’s distance and wide angle range is improved approximately 40 per cent. Legacy’s boot volume has increased – up 17 litres to 493 litres giving even more room for golf clubs and trundlers or ski gear with the 60:40 split fold down rear seat backrest.
Subaru’s unique Lineartronic™ transmission debuts on the 3.6 RS and has been further refined for other variants with improved efficiency. All Legacy transmissions are enhanced for less noise and even better response with the addition of step control found on WRX. Legacy has Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive advantage - the legendary stability, agility and safety of Symmetrical AWD is refined even further. Subaru’s pioneering engineering to bring this to all models started back in 1972. All new Subaru models sold in New Zealand have AWD as standard.
“After 26 years Legacy is reinvigorated with technology that hadn’t even been thought of in 1989,” said Mr. Dumper. “Many European brand drivers who have discovered the true cost of ownership of older models may discover this new Legacy is a much better option than buying risky second hand cars. They will get to enjoy the invisible advantages of Subaru’s engineering. Overlay that with superb Japanese build quality and design, including premium soft-touch interior trim and new Legacy promises to shine bright as a star in the Subaru constellation. The new infotainment system is a massive shift in Legacy to fully interactive technology. It takes both the driver and passenger experience to a whole new level in a Subaru,” said Mr. Dumper.
“Other clever innovations includes the active grille shutter, which reduces engine warm up time, improves aerodynamic performance and, in turn, fuel efficiency. The cabin is more spacious than ever before, while also creating a positively premium ambience, thanks to microscopic attention to detail with everything from the high quality of the soft-touch finishes to the solid feel of switchgear and low noise levels, thanks to strategic placement of insulation.”
“As always Legacy is again underpinned by All-Wheel Drive, underlining Subaru’s long-term safety commitment, which is reflected in the outstanding five-star rating for occupant safety from the respected Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). Mr. Dumper continued: “The new generation EyeSight driver assist system is also clear proof of superlative safety credentials. It adds new features that can help reduce fatigue and the likelihood, or severity, of collision.”
