The Dodge brand is upping the ante in the fast-growing full-size sport-utility vehicle (SUV) and crossover segments, introducing the new 2014 Dodge Durango at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. This new SUV is built on the Dodge brand's pillars of performance, style and innovation, delivering a new standard state-of-the-art class-exclusive eight-speed automatic transmission that improves fuel economy up to 9 percent, the Chrysler Group's award-winning Uconnect Access easy-to-use touchscreen technologies and the Dodge brand's signature racetrack LED tail lamps to driving enthusiasts in the market for a three-row family performance SUV.
When Dodge re-introduced the Durango in 2011, it immediately earned accolades from customers and critics alike. Its combination of sleek yet muscular lines, comfortable three-row seating, large cargo volume, class-leading power, driving range and towing capability and overall driving enjoyment was unlike anything ever seen in the SUV segment before. For 2014, the engineers and designers at Dodge have made the ultimate "no compromise" SUV even better.
Unique, yet appealing to all
Dodge is introducing the new 2014 Dodge Durango just as the SUV segments in the United States are showing tremendous growth. The new Durango competes in the full-size SUV segment, which with 900,000 units sold in 2012, has jumped 82 percent since 2009. With its standard three rows of seats and interior seating flexibility, Durango also appeals to shoppers looking for a full-size crossover. The two segments combined are up 48 percent since 2009, outpacing the industry. And of those full-size SUV and crossover sales, approximately 60 percent are three-row vehicles, placing Durango squarely in the heart of the market.
Durango customers are tech-savvy, youthful and full-of-life, with one of the youngest demographics in the segment. Their active lifestyles keep them on the run, and they depend on technology to keep them connected. The Durango delivers with the latest Uconnect Access technology and connectivity in an agile, flexible vehicle that is spacious with versatile three-row seating for passengers and their gear.
When the Dodge Durango debuted in 2011, it had a distinct advantage over the competition as an SUV designed to deliver performance, without compromising fuel economy. With the addition of the new eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters standard across the lineup, Durango ups the ante delivering improved efficiency, as well as a more refined and engaging driving experience.
The 2014 Durango offers a host of premium features, such as high-end interiors, the latest infotainment technology and impressive powertrain options, along with the exterior design that is distinctively Dodge.

High-tech exterior look
The Dodge Design team went to work to create a new exterior that conveys how advanced the Durango is, while maintaining the muscular body and confident personality customers expect from Dodge.
The new face of Durango is still distinctly Dodge and features a new, slimmer "split crosshair" grille with mesh textures unique to each trim level. Combined with the redesigned projector-beam headlamps and a raised front bumper, the 2014 Dodge Durango has an even more sinister look than the previous model. Durango's sculpted hood and grille complete the unique to Dodge forward-leaning profile that continues through the deeply browed headlamps.
For a more monochromatic appearance, the Rallye and R/T are equipped with dark-tinted headlamp bezels, body-color front and rear lower fascias, wheel flares, grille and sill moldings, all unique to the these packages. The R/T's ride height has also been lowered by 20 mm, further enhancing its sporty appearance and driving dynamics.
The Dodge Durango now features projector beam headlamps, with LED daytime running lamps on Rallye, Limited, RT and Citadel. The LED lamps run horizontally along the bottom edge of the headlamp and form a unique "hockey-stick" shape. Bi-xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps are standard on R/T and Citadel, turning the night into day. Auto-leveling technology adjusts headlight beam aim for slight changes in elevation.
The new front-end design features new projector fog lamps and fog lamp surrounds and matching crosshair grille texture. Combined with the taller front bumper, the new lower fascia gives the 2014 Dodge Durango a wider and more aggressive look.
In line with Dodge Charger, the side profile of the Durango maintains its powerful shape, accented by muscular fender arches and curves that flow back in through the doors, resembling the iconic shape of a coke bottle. The greenhouse of the new Durango blends seamlessly into the body, and a body-color rear spoiler significantly reduces drag while adding visual drama to the side profile.
The Dodge Durango receives all-new 18- and 20-inch aluminum wheel designs for every trim level, and feature finishes ranging from silver painted to polished aluminum to class-exclusive Hyper Black. In total, there are seven wheel designs and finishes to select from.
The rear of the Durango sees the addition of the dramatic LED racetrack tail lamp design inspired by the Dodge Charger and all-new Dart. Still immediately recognizable as a Durango, this latest evolution of the racetrack design features a new technology that blends the individual LEDs into one seamless looking ribbon of light. In total, there are 192 LEDs in the new tail lamp assembly that give Durango a presence on the street and make it instantly recognizable as a Dodge.
The rear fascia has been re-sculpted to fully integrate the trailer hitch. This gives Dodge Durango a cleaner, more premium look. Large 3.5-inch dual exhaust tips are standard on V-8-equipped vehicles, including the R/T, along with the Rallye; other V-6 powered Durango models have a 3-inch single tip.
A driver's three-row SUV
The new 2014 Durango continues to deliver excitement and refinement with world-class suspension and performance. Benchmarked against premium performance SUV's in the market, Durango delivers modernized refinement with electronics, suspension and structural characteristics that are usually found at much higher price points.
The unibody structure is built with a selection of high-strength and ultra-high strength steels that improve driving dynamics by integrating the suspension with the body — reducing flex and weight when compared with body-on-frame designs.
The short/long arm front suspension and isolated multi-link rear suspension features isolated front and rear cradles to deliver precise on-road handling and comfort. The four-wheel independent suspension, combined with the Durango's nearly 50/50 weight distribution, transmits to a solid driving feel and fun-to-drive characteristics.
Dodge Durango delivers on the pavement with aggressive shock and spring rates and large sway bars to handle body roll in hard turning maneuvers. Electro-hydraulic power steering, unique caster and camber settings along with standard electronic stability control also contribute to maintain tire grip and vehicle stability.
The Dodge Durango's rear-wheel-drive-based drivetrain is the foundation for its outstanding on-road driving performance. Available all-wheel drive (AWD) further enhances driver confidence by leveraging the SUV's 50/50 weight distribution.
The Durango's two AWD systems - one for the HEMI® V-8 and one for Pentastar V-6-powered models - greatly enhance the vehicle's traction and handling by delivering a smooth driving experience on a wide range of road conditions.
While competitors have switched to front-wheel-drive car-based platforms, the HEMI-powered AWD Durango features a low-range transfer case with a neutral position. Low range improves light off-road performance and helps ease maneuvers, such as pulling a boat up a steep launch or backing up with a trailer. The neutral position in the transfer case allows the vehicle to be flat-towed without damaging powertrain components.
A robust structure, impressive braking and unexpected stability also contribute to the Durango's best-in-class trailer tow capability. On models equipped with the Pentastar V-6 engine, the Durango can tow up to 6,200 pounds. When coupled with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine, the new 2014 Dodge Durango offers trailer tow capability of up to 7,400 pounds - more weight than a 24-foot boat and trailer, and up to 65 percent more than the competition.
All-new class-exclusive eight-speed automatic transmission
The new 2014 Dodge Durango now features Chrysler Group's new eight-speed automatic transmission with rotary shifter and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters as standard equipment on all models. This state-of-the-art transmission improves fuel economy up to 9 percent, along with enhanced performance and smoother shifts. All these attributes perfectly enhance Durango's fun-to-drive nature.
Fully electronic, the eight-speed automatic features on-the-fly shift map changing, with manual shifting capability using steering-wheel paddle controls. More than 40 individual shift maps for specific conditions optimize shift quality and shift points for fuel economy, performance and drivability. The intelligent software is attuned to the performance requirements of almost any driving demand.
The transmission efficiency and wide ratio spread provide the best possible fuel economy by operating at a lower engine rpm in both city and highway environments. The addition of more gear ratios also helps reduce the gaps normally associated with upshifting and downshifting.
Gear changes are nearly imperceptible due to the evenly spaced gear steps between each gear ratio. Internally, the transmission has four gear sets and five shift elements (multi-disc clutches and brakes). Only two shift elements are open at any time. With fewer open shift elements, drag losses due to multiple parts rotating relative to one another are reduced, improving fuel efficiency.
Powertrain choices
Named one of Ward's 10 Best Engines for three years, Durango's standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine paired with the new standard eight-speed transmission delivers up to a 9 percent improvement in fuel-economy when compared with the previous transmission, not to mention improved performance. The standard flex-fuel 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine generates an impressive 290 horsepower (295 horsepower on Rallye) and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, and can tow up to a best-in-class 6,200 pounds.
The 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine produces a best-in-class 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque with a best-in-class tow rating of 7,400 pounds. The 5.7-liter engine's Fuel Saver Technology with cylinder-deactivation seamlessly alternates between smooth, high-fuel-economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is in demand. This optimizes fuel economy when V-8 power is not required, without sacrificing vehicle performance or capability.
All-new Eco Mode
The 2014 Dodge Durango features a new Eco Mode that contributes to its improved fuel economy. Eco Mode optimizes the transmission's shift schedule, as well as throttle sensitivity, and Fuel Saver Technology with cylinder deactivation in V-8 models, to maximize fuel economy. The Eco Mode also manages interactive deceleration fuel shut-off (IDFSO), which cuts fuel delivery when the vehicle is coasting to reduce fuel consumption.
Eco Mode is automatically engaged upon vehicle startup. A button on the Durango's center stack allows drivers to disengage Eco Mode if more spirited performance is desired.
Advanced interior with premium craftsmanship
For 2014, Dodge designers are bringing Durango to the forefront of technology in the three-row SUV segment, while taking nothing away from the utility and build quality for which Durango is known.
The new instrument panel features a redesigned center stack that houses the new 5-inch and 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreens. Under these large, easy-to-use touchscreens are redundant button and knob controls for audio and climate functions. The bottom of the center stack houses a new media hub with an SD card slot, USB outlet and auxiliary jacks, as well as a storage bin.
The center console features a new segment-first rotary shifter for the standard eight-speed automatic that adds another level of refinement over the traditional gated automatic shifter. Manual shift functions have moved to paddle shifters on the back of the Durango's new steering wheel. These paddle shifters are standard on all 2014 Dodge Durango models.
The instrument cluster has also been given the high-tech treatment and now includes a full-color 7-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) screen similar to the one found in the all-new Dodge Dart. Standard on all models, this screen allows for drivers to customize more than 100 ways how information is presented.
Framing the new instrument cluster is a redesigned three-spoke steering wheel with the previously mentioned standard paddle shifters. The buttons to control TFT driver information functions are now larger and illuminated to make them easier to operate. Buttons for Uconnect and phone access now reside along the bottom edge of the vertical spokes. As before, Durango's popular audio controls are still found on the back of the upper steering wheel spokes.
A large lockable glove box has a viscous-dampened hinge, which helps it open and close smoothly.
Seating flexibility
With standard seven-passenger seating and luxurious second-row captain's chairs available on all models, the seats in the 2014 Durango can be converted to as many as 50 different configurations.
Families with three or more children will find the Durango's available captain's chairs with pass through especially helpful as two car seats can stay latched into the second row seats, and there's still easy pass-through for passengers to walk between to get to the third row. The second-row captain's chairs will also make adults feel like they are riding in first-class, with comfortable bucket seats with individual armrests.
The available second-row console features a dual-hinged door/armrest that when flipped forward, features a hard surface so that the armrest is not damaged by cargo. It also offers class-exclusive storage and features, including USB ports for charging electronics.
A fold-flat front passenger seat is standard on models that aren't equipped with the ventilated seat option. By folding forward, the passenger seat provides more utility, which lets customers load and carry long objects. Once flat, the seat back panel also serves as a convenient utility table. A new active head restraint system adds to the long list of available safety and security features.
A versatile 60/40 split folding second-row seat conveniently folds and tumbles. Transporting long items, like 10-foot 2x4s, is not a problem as the left side of the second row folds 60 percent, allowing the versatility of folding the 40 percent seat in tandem with the front passenger fold-flat seat. Longer items can be stowed even with passengers in the second row. To make passengers more comfortable, second-row seats also are available with heat, and they recline 18 degrees.
The third-row seat features a 50/50 split and is easily folded from the rear of the vehicle. For even more utility, both the second- and third-row seats fold to provide a flat load floor to haul a 6-foot couch with room for a coffee table. Clever touches abound, including a switch in the instrument panel to remotely lower the third-row headrests when not in use.
State-of-the-art technology
Five-inch and 8.4-inch touchscreens, a customizable 7-inch TFT gauge display, forward collision warning with crash mitigation, adaptive cruise control with stop and the latest generation of Uconnect Access Via Mobile are just some of the 2014 Dodge Durango's available state-of-the-art features.
The forward collision warning system with crash mitigation alerts the driver if they're approaching a vehicle in front too quickly, and the new adaptive cruise control with stop will keep Durango at a driver-selected distance from the vehicle in front when cruise control is engaged and can even bring the SUV to a controlled stop.
Embedded cellular technology that leverages Chrysler Group's strategic partnership with Sprint allows the latest Uconnect Access system to work its magic. The advanced service-delivery platform affords the kind of stability that enables direct communication when it's needed most.
Uconnect Access connects vehicle occupants directly with police, fire department or ambulance service dispatcher with the push of the "9-1-1" button on the Durango's rearview mirror - no cell phone needed. The same logic works for roadside assistance. One push of the "ASSIST" button summons help directly from Chrysler Group's roadside assistance provider or the Vehicle Customer Care Center.
Further peace of mind comes from the available theft alarm notification, which alerts owners via SMS text message or e-mail whenever their Durango's security alarm is activated. For the greatest convenience and flexibility, up to five people can be notified.
In the 2014 Dodge Durango, customers can put away their smartphones, keep their hands on the steering wheel and still interact with their devices in the ways to which they are accustomed. Media apps from Pandora to iHeartradio to Slacker are all available via voice command - a function of Uconnect's powerful, Cloud-based voice recognition capability.
Additional convenience is achieved when Uconnect syncs a customer's existing app so their favorite artists and stations are available at the touch of the screen, or by the sound of their voice.
Uconnect Access also allows the driver to execute many of the normal functions, such as climate, audio and Bluetooth, all by voice. The Cloud also enables voice texting, a breakthrough feature of Uconnect Access. Again leveraging the Sprint network, paired, Bluetooth-equipped cell phones that use the Message Access Protocol (MAP) can:
Receive a text message
Announce receipt of the text
Identify the sender
Read the message aloud
To respond, drivers can simply dictate. The Cloud helps the system's voice-recognition system assemble the response and "read" it back for accuracy before sending. Verbatim. No memorizing pre-approved messages such as, "I'm on my way."
The same advanced voice-recognition protocol simplifies the often-problematic process of entering navigation-system destinations with both hands on the wheel. The system will accept continuous, single-sentence instructions, such as: "Navigate to Ross Boulevard, Dodge City, Kansas."
The Durango's navigation system also features new 3D maps with graphic representations of well-known landmarks and terrain, designed to make on-road travel even easier to navigate.
Durango also has the ability to be used as a Wi-Fi hot spot. A powerful Bing search engine can be used via voice command if the driver needs to find a destination. Uconnect navigation then calculates a route and stores the destination's telephone number for handsfree calling.
A new 5-inch touchscreen is now standard on SXT models and controls audio, climate, phone and other vehicle functions, such as turning on the heated seats or determining how long the headlamps stay on after the ignition has been turned off. The high-resolution screen is intuitive and easy to use, yet redundant controls for audio and climate can be found below the touchscreen for drivers who prefer the classic dial approach.
Standard on Limited, R/T and Citadel models (and available on SXT and Rallye) is the award-winning 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen that controls audio, climate, phone, vehicle functions, navigation (if equipped) and the new Uconnect Access system. This system provides large, easy-to-read graphics - including new 3D mapping - with intuitive, easy-to-use controls.
The most looked at area of the interior, the instrument cluster, also has a new premium high-tech appearance with the new dynamic gauge cluster. Standard on all models and featuring a customizable 7-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid-crystal display, the cluster can be configured more than 100 ways for the ultimate driver-customized experience. Navigation, audio and fuel economy information and warning indicators can all be displayed in the 7-inch screen.
Mounted on the back of the front seats is an available all-new class-exclusive Blu-ray video rear entertainment system. This new system features two high-resolution 9-inch screens, one on each front seat back. Each screen offers four-times better resolution when compared with previous models and allow customers to watch their movies on Blu-ray or standard DVDs or play their high-definition media interface (HDMI) gaming systems via inputs for HDMI cables or RCAs for each screen integrated into the front seat backs. Wireless headphones are included as is a wireless remote.
More than 60 safety and security features are available on Dodge Durango
The new 2014 Dodge Durango offers consumers more than 60 available safety and security features, including standard all-speed traction control and electronic stability control (ESC), which improve overall vehicle handling and performance both on- and off-road. Standard trailer-sway control enhances towing capabilities and keeps the vehicle and trailer aligned as the Durango travels down the road.
Safety and security features available for the first time on the Dodge Durango include forward collision warning with crash mitigation, adaptive cruise control with stop, Uconnect Access with 9-1-1 call and roadside assistance.
Blind-spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Path (RCP) detection, which aid drivers when changing lanes or in parking lot situations, are also available. In addition, standard front-row active head restraints, standard full-length three-row side-curtain air bags and standard front-seat-mounted side thorax air bags offer enhanced occupant protection to passengers in the event of a collision. In total, Durango offers seven standard airbags.
Design
When it came to making the ultimate no compromise sport-utility vehicle (SUV) even better, Dodge designers wanted to convey just how technically advanced the 2014 Dodge Durango has become. They redesigned the Durango using the latest in lighting technology, and maintained Durango's attractive proportions while implementing new wheel designs and color palette.
When the Dodge Durango debuted in 2011, the design was inspired by the popular Dodge Charger with its muscular "coke-bottled" body sides and classic rear-wheel-drive (RWD) proportions. Its well-proportioned unibody platform separates the Durango from its boxy, truck-like SUV competition with a lower profile and aggressive curves that are still turning heads today.
"The Dodge Durango is one of the most expressive and well-proportioned SUVs in the segment, and through design, we want to convey how advanced Durango is for the 2014 model year," said Joe Dehner, Head of Dodge and Ram Design - Chrysler Group LLC. "New LED and projector lighting technology coupled with new full-width headlamp and tail lamp graphics, convey an enhanced width, while the all-new front and rear end themes add a touch of refinement."
Available in five different trim levels, including SXT, Rallye, Limited, R/T and Citadel, the new 2014 Dodge Durango delivers a technical and agile exterior profile with available 20-inch wheels in polished or class-exclusive Hyper Black, and a premium, technologically advanced interior.
New "aero-dramatic" design
With a new eight-speed automatic transmission, a programmable 7-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) gauge cluster and the latest Uconnect Access suite of technologies, the 2014 Dodge Durango is one of the most technologically advanced SUVs on the market. The Dodge design team went to work and created a new exterior that conveys how advanced the Durango has become, while maintaining the muscular body and confident personality customers expect from Dodge.
The new face of Durango is still distinctly Dodge and features a new, slimmer "split crosshair" grille. Combined with the redesigned projector-beam headlamps and a raised front bumper, the 2014 Dodge Durango has an even more sinister look than the previous model. Durango's sculpted hood and grille complete the unique to Dodge forward-leaning profile that continues through the deeply browed headlamps.
Three unique grille appearances are available on the 2014 Dodge Durango. Standard on SXT and Limited is a chrome surround with black "Split-Hex" texture, while the Rallye and R/T receive a body-color grille surround with black "Per-Form" texture. Citadel features a chrome grille surround with bright chrome "Cross-Hex" texture.
For a more monochromatic appearance, the Rallye and R/T are also equipped with black headlamp bezels, body-color front and rear lower fascias, wheel flares and sill moldings. The R/T's ride height has also been reduced by 20 mm, further enhancing its sporty appearance and driving dynamics.
The 2014 Dodge Durango features projector beam headlamps with LED daytime running lamps standard on Limited, R/T and Citadel. The LED lamps run horizontally along the bottom edge of the headlamp and form a unique "hockey-stick" shape. Bi-xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps are standard on R/T and Citadel and available on Limited, turning the night into day. Auto-leveling technology adjusts headlight beam aim for slight changes in elevation.
Keeping with the technology theme, all Durango models now feature standard projector fog lamps that provide additional low, wide-beam lighting.
The revised lower front fascia now features a new design with new fog light surrounds and matching crosshair grille texture. Combined with the taller front bumper, the new lower fascia gives the 2014 Dodge Durango a wider and more aggressive look.
In line with Charger, the side profile of the Durango maintains its powerful shape, accented by muscular fender arches and curves that flow back in through the doors, resembling the iconic shape of a Coke bottle. The greenhouse of the Durango blends seamlessly into the body, and a body-color rear spoiler significantly reduces drag while adding visual drama to the side profile.
The rear of the Durango sees the addition of the dramatic LED racetrack tail lamp design inspired by the Dodge Charger and Dart. Still immediately recognizable as a Durango, the new tail lamps incorporate cues from the previous Durango with the latest designs seen on the newest Dodge vehicles. This latest evolution of the racetrack design features a new technology that blends the individual LEDs into one seamless looking ribbon of light. In total, there are 192 LEDs in the new tail lamp assembly that give Durango a presence on the street that makes it instantly recognizable as a Dodge. Also on the tailgate is a revised hatch release featuring a hidden soft-touch button found in the hand recess.
The rear fascia also has been re-sculpted to fully integrate the trailer hitch. This gives Dodge Durango a cleaner, more premium look. Large 3.5-inch dual exhaust tips are standard on V-8-equipped vehicles and the Rallye; other V-6 powered Durango models have a 3-inch single tip.
Durango's efficient overall body design is a contributor to its increased fuel economy numbers.
The 2014 Dodge Durango offers a choice of seven all-new wheel designs for every trim level.
SXT and Limited models include standard 18-inch aluminum wheels. Featuring a 10-spoke design, the 18-inch wheels are finished in Tech-Silver on SXT and are polished with Mineral Gray pockets on Limited. A five-spoke, 20-inch aluminum wheel is available on the SXT with a Satin Silver finish or a fully polished finish on Limited.
Rallye and R/T feature standard 20-inch Hyper Black aluminum wheels with a twin five-spoke design. Optional on the R/T is a 20-inch aluminum wheel featuring a polished face with gloss black painted pockets.
Citadel features standard 20-inch polished aluminum wheels with a 15-spoke design.
An innovative roof rack side rail system is standard on Limited and Citadel models, and available on SXT. The system features integrated stowable cross bars to deliver improved fuel economy and convenience.
The 2014 Dodge Durango is available in the following colors: Billet Silver Metallic, Bright White, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat, Sandstone Pearl Coat, Deep Cherry Red Crystal, Granite Crystal Metallic, Maximum Steel Metallic, True Blue Metallic and Redline 2 Coat Pearl (Rallye and R/T only).
A study in craftsmanship and technology
When the Dodge Durango debuted in 2011, critics and customers alike gave rave reviews on the high levels of craftsmanship and design bestowed upon the interior. Durango's soft interior materials allowed for reduce gaps where components meet - greatly elevating interior quality. For 2014, the designers wanted to bring Durango to the forefront of technology in the seven-seat SUV segment, while taking nothing away from the utility and build quality Durango is noted for.
"For 2014, we brought the highly regarded interior of the Dodge Durango to the forefront of technology," said Klaus Busse, Head of Interior Design - Chrysler Group LLC. "The craftsmanship and quality materials we employed are still present, but they are now accentuated with the latest Uconnect touchscreen systems, a programmable gauge cluster, class-exclusive rear-seat Blu-ray entertainment system, rotary shifter and new, paddle shift steering wheel."
The Durango's new instrument panel features a redesigned center stack that houses the new 5-inch and 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreens. Under these large, easy-to-use touch screens are redundant button and knob controls for audio and climate functions. The bottom of the center stack houses a new media hub with an SD card slot, USB outlet and RCA jacks. The 5-inch touchscreen is standard on SXT and Rallye, while the 8.4-inch is standard on Limited, R/T and Citadel and available on SXT and Rallye.
The center console features a new rotary shifter for the new standard eight-speed automatic transmission that adds another level of refinement when compared with a traditional gated automatic shifter. Manual shift functions have moved to paddle shifters on the back of the new steering wheel. These paddle shifters are standard on all 2014 Dodge Durango models, adding an enhanced sense of sportiness and control.
The instrument cluster has also been given the high-tech treatment and now includes a 7-inch TFT screen similar to the one found in the Dodge Dart. Standard on all models, this screen allows for drivers to customize more than 100 different ways how information is presented with different speedometer styles, plus information for navigation, fuel economy, audio and warnings about the Durango's condition, such as tire pressure and door ajar.
Framing the new instrument cluster is a re-designed three-spoke steering wheel with the previously mentioned standard paddle shifters. The buttons to control the TFT driver information functions are now larger and illuminated to make them easier to operate. Buttons for Uconnect and phone access now reside along the bottom edge of the vertical spokes. The rim is sculpted so that the driver's hands have a sure grip at the 3- and 9-o'clock positions, and new paddle shifters are located on the backs of the upper spokes. As before, Durango's highly praised audio controls are still found on the back of the upper spokes.
This new steering wheel has a power tilt and telescoping function with memory on R/T and Citadel models. It is also heated and leather-wrapped on Limited, R/T and Citadel, with the leather available on SXT and Rallye.
A two-tier storage system is found in the Durango's center console. A center storage bin inside the console has an interior volume of six liters and features a liner on the bottom to prevent items from sliding around and keeping it easy to clean. The top tier delivers an additional half-liter of storage for easy access to personal items such as a wallet or iPod, while the underside of the lid also incorporates a tissue and pen holder.
A lockable glove box has a viscous-dampened hinge, which helps it open and close smoothly.
Seat configuration flexibility
With standard seven-passenger seating and luxurious second-row captain's chairs available on all models, the seats in the 2014 Durango can be converted to as many as 50 different configurations.
Premium cloth seats are standard on SXT, available in Black or two-tone Black / Light Frost
Rallye features premium cloth seats in Black
Limited offers standard Capri leather seats, available in Black or two-tone Black / Light Frost

Available on all trim levels are premium second-row captain's chairs with an innovative flip-and-fold feature and integrated soft-touch armrest. Between the seats is a floor-mounted console that can hold drinks and small objects, and was designed so passengers could easily walk from the second to third rows between the captain's chairs. Customers can also opt for a larger center console that has more storage space and class-exclusive features, such as illuminated cup holders and a USB jack, as well as a 12-volt outlet for charging phones, video games and the like.
The optional second-row captain's chairs can be folded flat for optimal cargo volume and utility, and are available with cloth or leather upholstery depending on how the customer equips their 2014 Dodge Durango.
A fold-flat front passenger seat is standard on models that aren't equipped with the ventilated seat option. By folding forward, the passenger seat provides more utility allowing long objects to be loaded inside. Once flat, the seat back panel serves as a convenient utility table. A new active head restraint system adds to the long list of available safety and security features.
A versatile 60/40 split-folding second-row seat conveniently folds and tumbles. Transporting long items, like 10-foot 2x4s, is not a problem as the left side of the second row folds 60 percent, allowing the versatility of folding the 40 percent seat in tandem with the front passenger fold-flat seat. Longer items can be stowed even with passengers in the second row. To make passengers more comfortable, second-row seats also are available with heat and recline 18 degrees.
Industry exclusive, recycled foam pad contours are shaped to provide comfort in the cushion and seat back with firm foam padding in the side bolsters and softer foam inserts. Dual firmness foam is used in selected areas to give occupants added comfort and support. The seat cushion is supported by a formidable but supple spring suspension, while cushion length is designed for thigh support. The seats are tuned to make Durango passengers exceptionally comfortable during long trips while making it easy for everyone to get in and out of the vehicle.
Mounted on the back of the front seats is an available all-new class-exclusive Blu-ray video rear entertainment system. This new system features a screen on each front seat back and will play standard DVDs as well as Blu-ray discs. It has inputs for high-definition media interface (HDMI) cables or RCAs for each screen integrated into the seat backs. Wireless headphones are included, as well as a wireless remote.
An overhead console also includes a covered storage bin, button for the available universal home garage door opener and switches for the available power sunroof and power liftgate. The sunglass bin has a push-push latch to provide a smooth, controlled rate to prevent contents from falling out.
Engineering
With its new, standard-equipment eight-speed automatic transmission - which delivers quicker acceleration, smoother shifting and improved efficiency - the three-row 2014 Dodge Durango cuts a wide swath through the full-size sport-utility (SUV) segment.
"The eight-speed transmission's wide ratio spread is a key factor in the upgraded performance of the 2014 Dodge Durango," said Mircea Gradu, Vice President and Head of Transmission Powertrain and Driveline Engineering. "It enhances the overall driving experience, delivering tangible customer value."
The new transmission's 7.03 ratio spread affords the best possible fuel economy by operating at the lowest possible rpm in both city and highway environments, both of which are enhanced by the Dodge Durango's hallmark blend of refinement and responsiveness.
When mated with the award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, the benefits of the new transmission are highlighted by the 2014 Dodge Durango's best-in-class driving range of more than 600 miles - more than any other gasoline-powered full-size SUV and a gain of more than 12 percent from the 2013 Durango's best-in-class range. Drivers can go all the way from New York City to Detroit without having to stop to refuel.
For 2014, a standard rotary knob replaces the shifter handle, while standard paddle controls afford manual shifting capability. In automatic mode, gear changes are nearly imperceptible because of the evenly spaced steps between each gear ratio.
The eight-speed transmission consists of four gear sets and five shift elements (multi-disc clutches and brakes). Only two shift elements are open at any time, reducing the drag losses that come with maintaining the rotation of multiple components.
The fully electronic eight-speed automatic features on-the-fly shift map changing. More than 40 individual shift maps for specific conditions optimize shift quality and shift points for fuel economy, performance and drivability.
Adaptive controls take into account variables including engine torque gradients, kick-down events, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, grade changes, friction detection and downshift detection to determine the appropriate shift map. Additional parameters integrated into the control strategy include vehicle speed control, electronic stability control interaction and temperature. The result is automatic shifting ideally attuned to the performance requirements of almost any driving demand.
Pentastar V-6 among industry's top engines
Named one of Ward's 10 Best Engines for three years running, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine helps boost the 2014 Dodge Durango's fuel economy as much as 9 percent, compared with the prior model year.
The standard flex-fuel 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine generates 290 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque on SXT, Limited and Citadel, and a best-in-class 295 horsepower on Rallye. Combined with the new eight-speed automatic transmission, a Pentastar-equipped Durango can tow a best-in-class 6,200 pounds.
The 3.6-liter double-overhead cam (DOHC) V-6 features high-flow intake and exhaust ports, which in combination with variable-valve timing (VVT) and dual independent cam phasing, allow optimum volumetric and combustion efficiency across the vehicle's performance spectrum. The new Durango's exceptionally flat torque curve is another hallmark achievement.
The engine's torque exceeds 90 percent of its peak from 1,900 rpm to 6,400 rpm, which affords outstanding drivability and responsiveness.
Structural elements of its intake and exhaust areas also deliver low levels of overall noise and achieve specific sound-quality goals that meet the requirements of discerning customers.
The Pentastar engine comes standard with an integrated oil cooler as part of the oil-filter adapter assembly. The filters' breakthrough design also contributes to a greener environment. Oil can be extracted from used filters to accommodate incineration.
Further enhancing the Pentastar's value is its use of long-life, 100,000-mile spark plugs and a high-energy coil-on-plug ignition system. Both help reduce vehicle ownership cost.
Best-in-class power and towing
Fuel economy improvements are not exclusive to the Pentastar-powered Dodge Durango. The 5.7-liter V-8 engine produces a best-in-class 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque, and boasts best-in-class towing capacity of 7,400 pounds. Equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD), the V-8 Durango can pull 7,200 pounds.
Mated to the new eight-speed transmission and helped by variable-valve timing (VVT), as well as Chrysler Group's seamless Fuel Saver Technology with cylinder-deactivation, the V-8 models now offer a fuel-economy improvement of up to 5 percent.
The 5.7-liter engine's VVT improves efficiency two ways. It reduces the engine's pumping efforts by closing the intake valve later, and it increases the expansion process of the combustion event. This allows more energy to be transferred to the crankshaft, instead of being expelled from an exhaust port as heat. VVT improves engine breathing, which further improves engine efficiency and power.
The 5.7-liter engine's Fuel Saver Technology with cylinder-deactivation seamlessly alternates between smooth, highly efficient four-cylinder operation when power demand is lessened and robust V-8 mode when demand is increased. This optimizes fuel economy without sacrificing vehicle performance or capability.
Eco Mode further improves fuel efficiency
The 2014 Dodge Durango features a new Eco Mode that contributes to its improved fuel economy. Eco Mode optimizes throttle performance, transmission shift schedule and, in V-8 models, Fuel Saver Technology. Eco Mode also manages interactive deceleration fuel shut-off (IDFSO), which cuts fuel delivery when the vehicle is coasting to reduce fuel consumption.
Eco Mode is automatically engaged upon vehicle startup. A button on the center stack allows driver's to disengage Eco Mode if more spirited performance is desired.
Refined and responsive
Complementing the 2014 Dodge Durango's powertrain upgrades are a host of design features that contribute to outstanding ride and handling, attributes consistent with the vehicle's reputation as a driver's SUV.
More than 5,500 welds - including 4,100 mm of arc welding - lend torsional stiffness to the Dodge Durango's unibody construction. High-strength and ultra-high-strength steels comprise 52 percent of the three-row SUV's sturdy skeleton. Closed-section front and rear cross-members further boost stiffness.
Durango's four-wheel independent suspension delivers additional ride-and-handling benefits, which are further enhanced by the vehicle's isolated suspension cradles. Available skid plates guard against damage on rough roads, which pose no problems for the Dodge Durango. The three-row Dodge Durango features larger sway bars to manage body roll and its shock and spring rates are up to 10 percent stiffer.
The twin-tube shocks that supplement the multi-link rear suspension also offer load-leveling capability. When the vehicle's payload increases, the system automatically responds by increasing ride height to the optimum level.
Additional cooling capacity and standard trailer-sway control further boost the Dodge Durango's capability.
Pentastar-powered versions of the Durango also feature electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS), which based on vehicle speed alters the amount of required driver effort. Low speeds trigger increased pump power to accommodate less effort. Pump power is reduced at highway speeds to afford a firmer feel.
As a side benefit, EHPS delivers greater efficiency. Because the pump is belt-driven, the system consumes less energy and delivers fuel savings of up to 3.5 percent.
The 2014 Dodge Durango's rear-wheel-drive-based drivetrain is the foundation for its outstanding on-road driving performance. Available all-wheel drive (AWD) further enhances driver confidence by leveraging the SUV's 50/50 weight distribution.
The Durango's two AWD systems - one for the V-8 and one for Pentastar V-6 powered models - greatly enhance the vehicle's traction and handling by delivering a smooth driving experience on a wide range of road conditions.
While competitors have switched to car-based platforms, the HEMI-powered AWD Durango features a low-range transfer case with a neutral position. Low range improves light off-road performance and helps ease maneuvers such as pulling a boat up a steep launch or backing up with a trailer. The neutral position in the transfer case allows the Durango to be flat-towed without damaging powertrain components.
The Dodge Durango's drag coefficient of approximately 0.35 contributes to efficiency, while also reducing cabin noise. Interior quietness is further improved by extensive use of acoustic materials, including laminated front-door glass.
In addition, the 2014 Dodge Durango features a double wall separating the engine compartment from the cabin - where there is no shortage of space. The independent rear suspension frees enough real estate to allow stowage of the full-size spare tire beneath the vehicle, alternately leaving more room for cargo behind the third-row seats.
Available bi-xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps make the outside world more visible. Auto-leveling technology adjusts beam area for slight changes in elevation. Four-inch projector fog lamps are standard equipment on all Durango models.
And for those who also like to be seen, the Dodge Durango can be had with 20-inch wheels and tires.
All things considered, the 2014 Dodge Durango busts the SUV segment wide open.
Quality
The thoroughly redesigned 2011 Dodge Durango led the Dodge brand's recent product assault, generating high marks for customer satisfaction and recommendations from numerous consumer magazines.
Some might think the Durango team had earned the privilege to relax and enjoy the accolades - but the Dodge product team isn't resting on its laurels.
"We now have a culture of continuous improvement at Dodge. We're always looking for ways to improve our products, even while the current model is still fresh in the marketplace," Doug Betts, Senior Vice President — Quality, Chrysler Group, explained. "We're doing more than an appearance update, making significant investments to upgrade the powertrain, completely changing the electrical architecture and enhancing all the interior features the driver sees and touches."
Key updates for the 2014 Dodge Durango include an eight-speed automatic transmission to improve performance and fuel economy, plus the newest Uconnect system that balances advanced technology and connectivity features with easy-to-use controls and voice commands. Additionally, the vehicle offers an enhanced video and entertainment system, which now features two 9-inch screens mounted to the front-row seat backs. The separate screens display a higher resolution picture that supports Blu-ray video or video games, and passengers decide whether to watch the same entertainment or choose separate activities on their personal screens.
From the driver's seat, everything the driver sees, touches, and even speaks, using voice commands, is enhanced to increase functionality, connectivity and responsiveness. Not only does it work better, it looks better packaged in more premium materials and elegant graphics. This includes a redesigned steering wheel that is optimized for driving position while also providing control buttons for frequently used features like radio, cruise control, phone and voice-activated commands. The Dodge team took copious notes on customer habits to determine the ideal location for fingertip controls so that drivers could comfortably keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
Another significant interior change for Dodge Durango is the availability of the new Uconnect Access 8.4-inch touchscreen. Connectivity and touchscreens involve rapidly changing technology and ever-increasing consumer expectations - both of which have a significant impact on the overall quality assessment of new vehicles. The Uconnect team constantly evaluates consumer feedback, placing a high priority on designing systems that are intuitive for both tech-savvy customers, as well as tech-averse drivers.
The prior model Durango was one of the first Dodge vehicles to undergo Chrysler Group's revamped validation testing requirements, racking up twice as many testing miles as previous new vehicle launches. This added testing proved so valuable the company continued the public-road reliability testing after the market launch. Each month, five random vehicles from every Chrysler Group model line are pulled off the assembly line so they can be driven day and night to accumulate miles as part of the ongoing effort to find and fix any issues before customers do.
The 2014 Dodge Durango will continue to be built at Jefferson North Assembly Plant (JNAP) in Detroit, using World Class Manufacturing (WCM) principles that involve all employees in the manufacturing process for continuous process and quality improvement. To achieve world-class fit-and-finish standards, Durango bodies and components will undergo inspection in the state-of-the-art Metrology Center. JNAP was the first Chrysler Group plant to build a Metrology Center, where highly-precise dimensional control tools can find sources of build variation - even when components appear perfect to the naked eye.
Technology
The new 2014 Dodge Durango introduces state-of-the-art new technology to the full-size sport-utility vehicle (SUV) segment, including a customizable standard class-exclusive 7-inch digital instrument cluster, available 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen with Uconnect Access services and sophisticated new features designed to help keep drivers focused on the road.
The Dodge Durango also marks the debut this year of Uconnect Access Via Mobile, an extension of Chrysler Group's suite of Uconnect Access services. Its easy-to-learn interface and easy-to-view 8.4-inch touchscreen allow customers to enjoy their personal Internet radio accounts and stream audio content into the new Dodge Durango utilizing their own mobile device data plans. The result: a truly personalized listening experience.
Uconnect Access Via Mobile seamlessly brings four popular Internet radio apps into the Durango. They are: Aha by Harman, iHeartRadio, Pandora and Slacker Radio. Like all Uconnect-brand features, it is designed to be easy to learn and easy to use.
With Pandora, for instance, customers can register their preferences by hitting the app's familiar buttons - "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" - which are displayed on the available 8.4-inch touchscreen.
In addition, unique steering-wheel controls enable song skipping.
Award-winning Uconnect Access
The Durango's available Uconnect Access Via Mobile represents a significant enhancement to Uconnect Access, a suite of services already celebrated as the industry benchmark for responsible in-vehicle connectivity. AOL Autos recently named Uconnect Access its Technology of the Year.
The system leverages Chrysler Group's strategic partnership with Sprint, equipping the Dodge Durango with a built-in wireless connection to accommodate Emergency Services Simplified, a suite of services designed specifically to provide security and convenience.
Some competitive systems use built-in wireless capability to connect the driver with a concierge call center. Others alert emergency services personnel directly; but they do so through the driver's mobile phone.
Uconnect Access uses embedded wireless technology to connect vehicle occupants directly with local emergency-service dispatchers - all with the push of the 9-1-1 button on the Dodge Durango's rearview mirror.
Uconnect Access applies the same logic to roadside assistance. One push of the "ASSIST" button summons help directly from Chrysler Group's roadside assistance provider, the Vehicle Customer Care Center or Uconnect Customer Care Center.
Further peace of mind comes from the available theft alarm notification, which uses a smartphone app to alert registered customers via SMS or e-mail whenever their vehicles' security alarms are activated. Up to five people can be notified.
Additional Uconnect Access security features include the ability to remotely sound the Dodge Durango's horn and flash its lights - measures enabled by the Uconnect Access smartphone app that could serve as potential crime deterrents or simply to locate the vehicle in a crowded parking lot. For even more convenience, remote door-locking and unlocking and remote start can be performed with the Uconnect mobile app.
With their hands on the wheel, Dodge Durango customers can use Uconnect Access to tap the power of the Cloud. When a compatible Bluetooth cell phone is paired, Uconnect Access will:
announce receipt of incoming texts
identify the senders
then "read" the messages aloud
To respond or compose any new text, simply dictate a message of 140 characters or less. The Cloud-based voice-recognition system converts spoken words to text and "reads" it back for accuracy before sending. Verbatim. And it can all be done handsfree, without having to memorize any pre-approved messages.
Advanced on-board voice-recognition simplifies the often problematic process of entering navigation-system destinations while keeping both hands on the wheel. In the new 2014 Dodge Durango, the available system will accept continuous, single-sentence instructions, such as: "Navigate to Ross Boulevard, Dodge City, Kansas."
On-road travel is made easier by the premium's navigation new 3D maps with graphic representations of well-known cities and landmarks, as well as street signs.
Unsure of your destination? Use voice commands to engage the new Uconnect Access connected search service and simply say what you are looking for.
Uconnect Access navigation marshals all of its capabilities - connected search, turn-by-turn prompts and SiriusXM Traffic's dynamic route guidance - to get you to your destination stress-free. It will even store the destination's phone number so you can call handsfree.
Once you reach your destination you can also transform the Dodge Durango into an on-demand WiFi hotspot.
Sophisticated looks, sophisticated features
Immediately noticeable upon entering the new 2014 Dodge Durango are its new center-stack touchscreens, available in 5-inch or 8.4-inch configurations. Each accommodates audio, climate and phone operation. The latter also affords control of features ranging from navigation to heated seats. The large, high-resolution icons on the 8.4-inch touchscreen - the Uconnect brand's signature - deliver intuitive customer interaction. But the system also incorporates mechanical controls for those who prefer the tactile approach. Such flexibility, a focus of critical acclaim, delivers inherent convenience.
Standard on all 2014 Dodge Durango models is a state-of-the-art instrument cluster featuring a multi-view 7-inch customizable thin-film transistor (TFT) full-color liquid-crystal display. First introduced on the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart, this cluster can be personalized more than 100 different ways to show the most critical driving information - from tire pressure to turn-by-turn navigation - with clear, intuitive graphics. Navigation, audio, fuel-economy information and warning indicators all can be displayed at a glance, helping to keep the driver's eyes and attention on the road.
Enabled by LED technology more commonly found in consumer electronics, the pixel illumination in TFT technology is more precisely controlled, which makes for "blacker" blacks and more vivid colors. Such advancement allows crisper graphics, which are critical to the kind of instant recognition drivers need to maintain proper focus on the task at hand: driving.
Front-seat occupants aren't the only ones who benefit from high-tech displays. Second-row passengers can treat themselves to video entertainment via an available seatback Blu-ray video system. This new system will play standard DVDs as well as Blu-ray discs, and has inputs for high-definition media interface (HDMI) cables or RCAs for each 9-inch screen integrated into the front-seat backs. Wireless headphones are included as is a wireless remote.
Safety and Security
The new 2014 Dodge Durango offers consumers more than 60 available safety and security features, including standard all-speed traction control and electronic stability control (ESC), which improve overall vehicle handling and performance both on- and off-road. Standard trailer-sway control (TSC) enhances towing capabilities and keeps the vehicle and trailer aligned going down the road.
