Today we release our long anticipated interview with a popular artist from across the web Sophie Doodle.

Who is SophieDoodle?

I’m Sophie, and…I like to doodle! I’m a Graphic Designer by trade, life time tea addict and all round Girl-Geek.

What’s your background? How did you find yourself in the tshirt design world?

I stumbled blindly upon it like I do most things in life I think! I first got into it at Uni when I was doing my Graphic Design degree, I did it as a bit of a side-line whilst doing Uni work, purely because I’ve so much love for certain TV shows and films and I really liked having a way of expressing that through t-shirt artwork. Now I work as an in-house designer, and I’m just trying to continue with as much of the t-shirt designing as I can, because I truly just have so much fun creating them.

Where did you go to University? Would you recommend the course?

I technically went to a college not a Uni, as I chose to study close to home for my Degree, but I still count it as “my time at Uni” because that’s essentially what it was, and there were people who came from away to study the course. I went to Somerset College of Arts and Technology, and one thing I could definitely recommend is the approach to finding a creative design and also the group crits were a big plus. I know not all Design courses make such a big deal of that, but we had crits all the time, which was great, because it felt like a beehive of creativity with people bouncing ideas off each other and helping each other develop their design ideas.

What have been your favourite designs you’ve released? Which have been most successful?

Argh, that’s a tough one..um…my personal favourite designs are probably “Team Tea” because my undying love for a good cuppa will never die, and I was pleased with the tea-bags little grin! I also am really pleased with a new design I’ve just finished called “Miss Me?” which is a bit of a homage to Andrew Scotts ‘Moriarty’ in Sherlock. I was quite happy with all the references and the composition of that design.

As for my most successful, I would say “Loki’s Army” has been one of my biggest hits, I’ve even seen a photo of a girl wearing that design stood next to Tom Hiddleston! That made me make incomprehensible *squees* of joy! I’ve also got a design called “3 Words…I’m The Doctor” which has been quite a big hit on Redbubble.

What is your process? How do you go from thought to paper to computer to selling?

I usually just start daydreaming and suddenly I have a post-it note with an awfully scribbly looking doodle in my hands and that’s how it always begins…it’s always a post-it note.

What is your favourite outlet for selling your designs?

I don’t think I have a favourite; sites that accept my artwork? Hee hee! The internet as a whole is my favourite outlet, there’s always new sites and places to expand your visibility as an artist or designer, I think it’s great

What plans do you have for 2014 and beyond? Any chance of a sneak peek?

Gosh I hate committing to plans incase I fail miserably at them! I’d like to keep improving my technique, there are designs I’ve done in the past that I look at now and wince slightly, because I know I could make them look better now. Hey maybe that’s a plan! Maybe I will re-do some old pieces, I’d also like to try and develop my style a bit more, I feel like the most popular artists have a distinctive style. As long as I’m creating regular artwork and I know that each design wasn’t rushed then I’ll be happy.

I’m also determined to write and illustrate a children’s book, and to buy a Wacom Cintiq but not sure if those will be on my 2014 list, will have to wait and see!

What would you see as the best thing your designs could be/do?

Cheese-fest answer incoming…making people happy! I feel as long as whatever I’m doing creatively is giving someone somewhere some enjoyment I get a satisfaction in that.

What artists/creatives inspire your work and designs?

I find so many people inspiring, but to name a few…I love Karen Hallions work; her Doctor Who/Disney Princess crossover idea was genius and it’s an idea which can just run and run. I think Nan Lawsons illustrations are fab and her style is lovely, I’m a big fan of the wit and clever construction of Olly Moss’ poster designs, and I will always have a soft spot for Vincent Van Goghs paintings.

Who are your top folk to follow on twitter?

Ugh, I’m so uncool I’m not very good with Twitter.

I’ve just checked, apparently I follow 146 people?! (this is news to me!) I’d say @tshirtroundup is a good’un and @theshirtlist and @ilovetypography

What are your top 5 films/tv shows?

Films: -

* Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

* Withnail & I

*Hot Fuzz

* 500 Days Of Summer

* The Fall

TV Shows: -

*Doctor Who

* Pushing Daises

*Sherlock

* Black Books

* Friends

Away from all the tshirts – what else do you enjoy?

I enjoy eating pizza, going to the cinema, seeing friends, buying dresses (much like Kaylee in Firefly, I happily just sit and look at them) participating in anything Doctor Who related, going on day trips, impersonating different accents, making pavlovas, singing awfully whilst driving, trying to be Karen Gillan, making friends with cats…I’ve gone too far havn’t I?
