MADONNA is to return to the director’s chair for literary adaptation Ade: A Love Story.

Based on the debut novel by Rebecca Walker, the story follows a 19-year-old American student as she travels with a feminist companion in Africa who falls in love with a young Muslim man on an island off the coast of Kenya.

Their romance and eventual marriage plans are soon tested by cultural and political forces.

Walker is the daughter of Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple, and civil rights lawyer Mel Leventhal, and her novel reflects on her own experiences of growing up interracial and with mixed religions. It also touches upon sex, religion, race and lesbianism.

Ade: A Love Story is being produced by Bruce Cohen, who is notable for Silver Linings Playbook, and will mark Madonna’s first foray behind the camera since her critically panned period romance W.E, which looked at the story of Edward and Mrs Simpson as seen through the eyes of the latter person.

As yet, there is no word on casting and no release date.
