Book Description

The Indie Book of the Day for 7th of May, 2014!

Genre: Literary, Historical

The Long Shadow is compelling historical novel which tells the human story of the Allied campaign in Salonika during WW! and will appeal to readers of The Island and The Thread.

Fourteen-year-old Andrew discovers his mother’s hidden diary at his grandmother’s home during a Christmas gathering. His eyes are opened to a family secret when he reads about her time as a nurse in Salonika during the First World War, and the tragic love affair she had with his father, a Greek Officer who died in battle. Four years later, Andrew is impelled to visit his father’s land and trace his roots. What – and who – he finds there will change his life forever.
The Long Shadow is filled with descriptions of Greece and its people. Dramatic images of battle and the terrible conditions endured by the Allied Armies entrenched around Salonika in the “Birdcage” are authentic and vivid. Greek music and dance play a vital role, reconciling in Andrew the dichotomy of belonging to two very different cultures and helping him to unite them in his heart and soul.

‘I’m immensely impressed by the novel, especially the Greek scenes. It’s a marvellously accomplished book. Many congratulations on your achievement.’
Colin Wilson: renowned author of The Outsider, The Occult, Mysteries and many more)

An unusual love story set in a remarkable place at a time that tore the world apart. Barbara Nadel: author of the Inspector Ikmen series set in Turkey

Born in Cairo, Egypt, I came to Britain during winter and saw my first view of snow! My English Dad fell in love with my beautiful Greek Mum in Athens during the war and wrote her a forty page love-letter when fighting in the desert so I guess writing is in my genes! I wrote my first novel in an exercise-book at sixteen and many others after that but then gave up writing for a long time. Now retired and living in Malvern, the muse has returned. I’ve since written and published The Long Shadow which is set in WW1 Greece, The Crimson Bed with a background of Pre Raphaelite, London, and Middle Watch set amongs the coasts and lighthouses of England. If you like novels with depth, passion and drama, these stories are for you.

People have asked for a sequel to The Long Shadow. Thus Dying Phoenix was born. It is now available as a paperback and in Kindle form. Dying Phoenix follows on from the story of Andrew Cassimatis and his family and will take place in 1966-67 when the military took over the country and held it in an iron grip for seven years.

I was asked earlier this year (2013) to give a talk on The Long Shadow at the American College in Thessaloniki. It was a delightful and unique experience and I’ve made some wonderful friendships there. This led to my being signed up by Oceanida.gr and The Long Shadow will be available in Greek in the autumn.
