WASHINGTON, DC––Three Indian-Americans– Dipal Doshi, Sachin Jain and Rupal Patel –have been selected by the Aspen Institute for the second class of its Health Innovators Fellowship. They, along with 18 others health care leaders, will participate in a two-year Fellowship designed to strengthen the leadership of innovators across the US health care ecosystem and challenge them to create new approaches that will improve the health and well-being of all Americans.

The Fellows come from all parts of the country and hail from a wide variety of health care industries and sectors—including medicine, pharmaceuticals, public health, biotechnology, insurance, mental health, government, venture capital, genomics, and more.

Here are the bios of three Indian-Americans as provided by the Aspen Institute:

Dipal Doshi, Chief Business Officer, Amicus Therapeutics, Inc. Princeton, NJ

Dipal Doshi is the chief business officer of Amicus Therapeutics and the general manager of Scioderm, Inc., a rare disease company Amicus acquired in 2015. Prior to joining Amicus, Dipal founded RStreet Advisors, a healthcare consulting firm through which he advised pharmaceutical, biotech, and diagnostics companies on business development, corporate strategy, and market and commercial planning. From 2008 to 2013, Dipal was the senior vice president and member of the management team at Auven Therapeutics, a global private equity and bio-pharmaceutical development company. Dipal led or participated in the operations and financing of several biotech and pharmaceutical companies and was an Observer on the Board of Directors of Spirogen (acquired by AstraZeneca in 2013) and ADC Therapeutics.

From 2005 to 2008, Dipal was the head of corporate development for Catalent Pharma Solutions and also held interim operating roles in the biotechnology, inhalation, and analytical tools practices. Prior to Catalent, Dipal was a member of Merrill Lynch’s Investment Banking Group. During his tenure at Eli Lilly, Dipal was a member of both the strategic marketing team and Lilly Ventures where he developed and led a portfolio company. He was also a sales representative in New York. As a consultant for both Mercer Management Consulting (Oliver Wyman) and Sapient Corporation (Publicis), Dipal advised healthcare, consumer, and technology companies.  Dipal received a B.A. from Rutgers University and an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Dipal is a Fellow of the second class of the Health Innovators Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.

Sachin Jain, MD President and CEO, CareMore Los Angeles, CA

Sachin H. Jain, MD, is President and CEO at CareMore Health System, an innovative health plan & care delivery system with $1.2 billion in revenue and over 100,000 members in eight states. He is also a consulting professor of medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine and a contributor at Forbes. Dr. Jain was previously CareMore’s chief medical officer and chief operating officer. Prior to joining CareMore, Dr. Jain was chief medical information & innovation officer at Merck & Co. He also served as an attending physician at the Boston VA-Boston Medical Center and was on faculty at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School. From 2009-2011, Dr. Jain worked in the Obama Administration, where he was senior advisor to Donald Berwick when he led the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Dr. Jain was the first deputy director for policy and programs at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, and he was special assistant to David Blumenthal when he was the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Dr. Jain graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College with a bachelor’s degree in government and earned his MD from Harvard Medical School and MBA from Harvard Business School. He trained in medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, earned his board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine, and continues to practice medicine at CareMore. He is co-founder and co-editor-in-chief of the Elsevier journal Healthcare: The Journal of Delivery Science & Innovation and is an elected member of the National Academy of Social Insurance. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and in journals such as the New England Journal, JAMA, Health Affairs, and the Harvard Business Review blogs, and he was an editor of the book, The Soul of a Doctor (Algonquin Press). Dr. Jain is a native of Bergen County, New Jersey, but presently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Rupal Patel, PhD Founder & CEO, VocaliD Inc. Boston, MA

Rupal Patel is founder and chief executive officer of VocaliD, a speech technology company that creates custom voices for text-to-speech applications, leveraging its crowd sourced Human Voicebank. VocaliD’s award-winning technology has been featured on TED and NPR and in leading news and technology outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, Wired, Bloomberg, and BuzzFeed. Rupal is currently on leave from Northeastern University where she is a tenured professor in the College of Computer and Information Science and the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Her research focuses on speech motor control in healthy talkers and those with neuromotor speech impairment; she applies this empirical evidence to the design of technologies that enable, enrich, and enhance communication. To address these interdisciplinary topics, she founded and directs the Communication Analysis and Design Laboratory, the Center of Speech Science and Technology, and the doctoral program in Personal Health Informatics.



Rupal Patel

She has 60+ peer-reviewed journal articles, has presented at several hundred national and international conferences, and has garnered over $5M in research funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and private foundations. Rupal also holds appointments in the Harvard/MIT Speech and Hearing Biosciences and Technology program, the Department of Psychiatry at University of Massachusetts, and Haskins Laboratory at Yale University. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Calgary, her master’s and PhD from the University of Toronto, and she completed her post-doctoral training at MIT. Rupal is a Fellow of the second class of the Health Innovators Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.

The Aspen Institute launched the Fellowship in 2015 in partnership with the Greenville Health System, South Carolina’s largest not-for-profit healthcare system and an advocate for healthy living initiatives across the state.

The Health Innovator Fellows will spend four weeks over the course of two years exploring their leadership, core values, desired legacies, and their vision for the health care system. Each Fellow commits to launching a leadership venture that will stretch and challenge them and have a positive impact on health care in the U.S. The Health Innovator Fellows join more than 2,200 other entrepreneurial leaders from 49 countries to become members of the Aspen Global Leadership Network (AGLN).

The Health Innovators Fellowship Program was created in 2015 to strengthen the leadership of innovators across the US health care ecosystem and to connect, inspire, and challenge them to create new approaches that will improve the health and well-being of all Americans. This two-year program is modeled on both the highly successful Henry Crown Fellowship and the Liberty Fellowship, using the time-tested method of text-based dialogue and building upon the Aspen Institute’s commitment to values-based, action-oriented leadership. The Aspen Institute controls the content of the Fellowship and the selection of the Fellows.
