Oppo, the Chinese smartphone maker has launched two new phones in China – Oppo R9s and Oppo R9s Plus. The phones are not simple devices by any means and pack a punch. Oppo R9s and Oppo R9s Plus and currently launched only in China and like many Chinese brand smartphones, it is unclear if these phones are only for the Chinese market or will they come to the internal market, specifically India too. Oppo R9s and Oppo R9s Plus fall in the mid-range device category and as they boast of some pretty strong on-paper specifications, they are definitely not for the budget conscious. Oppo has always been heavily invested in smartphone photography and Oppo R9s and Oppo R9s Plus also boast of some strong photography features.
Oppo is clearly following the latest trend where smartphone makers are launching two devices with slightly similar specifications but different sizes at the same time. The larger device is more powerful of the two and also the more expensive one. In the case of Oppo R9s and Oppo R9s Plus too, Oppo R9s Plus is the larger, more powerful device. However, certain features in both the phones stay the same and there isn’t any change in them. While Apple launched iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus with completely different specifications, Google Pixel broke the trend where Google Pixel XL was the more powerful device but then it came with the same camera features and internal memory as that of Google Pixel. Oppo R9s and Oppo R9s Plus go the Google way where Oppo R9s Plus is the more powerful device in terms of certain specifications but then others it simply shares with Oppo R9s.
Coming to specifications of Oppo R9s Plus, as said the phone is the better of the two in terms of features and also price. Oppo R9s Plus comes with a 6-inch display. The phone is a full HD display device and comes with a display resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a density of 367 ppi. Oppo R9s Plus is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 to protect it from scratches. The phone is an all-metal device and looks quite similar to the smartphone in terms of design and looks. Oppo R9s Plus is available in just one colour and that is the Gold colour. Oppo R9s Plus runs Android Marshmallow and there might just be an Android Nougat update rolled out in the future. Coming to the hardware of the device, Oppo R9s Plus runs Qualcomm MSM8976 Pro Snapdragon 653 octa-core processor under the hood. in terms of display and the processor, Oppo R9s Plus is not too different from it’s predecessor, Oppo R9 Plus which was launched earlier this year. Oppo R9s Plus comes with 64 GB internal memory and 6GB RAM. The RAM is clearly the highlight of this device. Oppo R9s Plus also supports expansion up to 256 GB.

Coming to the next most important feature of Oppo R9s Plus – the camera. The phone comes with a 16 MP Sony IMX398 camera sensor. While the initial Oppo phones came with the twister camera – the back camera also doubled up as the front camera, the newer Oppo phones have advanced camera capabilities for the front and the back. The Oppo R9s Plus comes with the same front end camera with a resolution of 16 MP and the Sony IMX398 camera sensor. Oppo is promising equal focus on both – the front and the back with Oppo R9s Plus. The phone comes with a 4000 mAh battery and there is a 3.5mm headphone jack in the device. The speciality of the battery is that Oppo R9s Plus is capable of giving 2 hours worth of talktime in just 5 minutes of charge. As the Oppo R9s Plus is presently a China-specific device, the price of the phone in the international market is unknown. In China, Oppo R9s Plus is priced at CNY 3,499, which is a high price tag in the country. Apart from the Gold colour, Oppo R9s Plus is also available in Rose Gold and Black colours in China.

The younger sibling Oppo R9s is different from Oppo R9s Plus only when it comes to the display size and the processor. Just like Oppo R9s Plus, Oppo R9s also runs Android Marshmallow. The phone smaller is size and also cheaper. Oppo R9s comes with a 5.5 inch display. However, the display is a full HD display and comes with a pixel resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and 401 ppi pixel density. Oppo R9s is better in terms of display density as compared to Oppo R9s Plus. Oppo R9s also comes with Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor. However, while the internal memory is the same as Oppo R9s Plus at 64 GB, the RAM is downgraded to 4 GB from the Oppo R9s Plus’ 6GB. The only other noticeable difference in the Oppo R9s is that of battery where the phone comes with 3010 mAh battery. The camera of both, Oppo R9s and Oppo R9s Plus is the same. Oppo R9s is priced at CNY 2,799.
