This much awaited auspicious occasion arrives on the fourth day of Bhadarva Shukla-Paksh according to the Hindu calendar and is mostly celebrated for 10 days as Ganpati, Ganesh Festival or Ganeshotsav.

Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati who were born on the fourth day of Magh and especially during that time there is an interconnection between Ganesh and Chaturthi.  Slowly and steadily this custom started fading out, soon freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak brought back the old tradition in the form of a 10-day festival. Devotees worship Ganeshji’s idol for 10 days and then those idols get immersed in water at the end of the festival. During Maratha King Shivaji’s empire Ganesha Chaturthi was celebrated as a public event. There is a myth saying that Lord Ganesha were created out of sandalwood paste which was been used by Parvati and further she breathe life into that statue.

A clay model of Lord Ganesha is made before arrival of the festival and the idols are easily available in sizes from 3/4th of an inch to 25 feet tall. Devotees worship Ganeshji’s idol for 10 days and then those idols get immersed in water at the end of the festival. On this auspicious day, devotees chant various religious mantras and songs related to Lord Ganesha and this ritual is termed to be ‘pranapratishhtha’.
