Gorakhpur, Feb 11: Voting for the first phase for Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017 began at 7 AM on Saturday. Voters queued outside polling booths to cast their votes amid amid high security arrangements. A total of 839 candidates are trying their luck in the 73 seats in the Assembly Elections this time. These 73 constituencies which fall in the western Uttar Pradesh had seen communal disturbances in the recent past. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has won all three MLC seats from Kanpur, Gorakhpur and Bareilly in UP. The beginning a seven-phase electoral process in Uttar Pradesh started from the western fringe of Uttar Pradesh. The polls in the state, starting today will decide the fate of key parties like the BJP, Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance, and the Bahujan Samaj Party.

The first phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017 covers 15 districts of western UP. Out of the 403 Assembly seats, 73 Assembly constituencies in 15 districts of western Uttar Pradesh will elect their legislators today. All the parties have tried and wooed voters since the past few months and are trying to win with thumping majority. The Bharatiya Janata Party hopes to replicate its 2014 success. In 2014, the BJP won 71 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the Union elections.

Uttar Pradesh Elections: 1st phase: 73 constituencies, 15 Districts,Election date: 11 February.

2nd phase: 67 assemblies, 11 Districts, Election date: 15 February.

3rd phase: 69 constituencies, 12 districts, Election date: 19 February.

4th phase: 53 constituencies, 12 Districts, Election date: 23 February.

5th phase: 52 constituencies, 11 districts,2 February, 9 February, 11 February, 13 February, 27 February.

6th phase: 49 assembly constituencies, 7 districts, 8 February, 15 February, 16 February, 18 February, 4 March.

7th phase: 40 constituencies, 7 districts, 11 February, 18 February, 20 February, 22 February, 8 march.

About 40% of the BJP candidates in phase-1 have declared criminal cases against them, the most, followed by the BSP with a close 39 per cent, the Association for Democratic Reforms informed. Moreover, reports state that the SP-Congress alliance has combined 28 per cent candidates with criminal cases.

During the election phase, voters in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh will go to vote between February 11 and March 8. Polls in Uttar Pradesh will be held for 403 seats and will be conducted in seven-phases. The seven phase elections will be held on 11, 15, 19, 23 and 27 February, and 4 and 8 March.  Out of the total 403 assembly seats, the Samajwadi Party will field its candidates on 298 seats while the Congress will be contesting the remaining 105 seats.

Earlier in the day, polling was delayed in booth no. 42 in Mathura’s Govardhan, and in booth numbers 119 and 120 in Baghpat as Electronic Voting Machines (EVM)s are not working. Poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, with over 14,12,53,172 voters, sends the largest number of Members of Parliament to the Rajya Sabha.
