New Delhi, Feb 6: While the pollsters predicted neck to neck fight between Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Punjab Assembly Elections 2017, the grand old party claimed victory in the February 4 polls. Congress camp claimed that internal surveys showed that the party would win 67 seats. AAP would bag second position, winning 40 seats, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance would get only 10 seats in the Punjab Assembly elections 2017, said the Congress.
Former Union minister and Delhi state Congress president Ajay Maken claimed Congress would cross the majority mark of 59 and win 67 seats in the Punjab Assembly elections 2017. Ajay Maken shared poll predictions on his Twitter handle, saying optimism shown by AAP is a ploy to target Election Commission post defeat. AAP would get only 40 seats in Punjab Assembly elections, Ajay Maken predicted. The Congress leader also claimed that SAD-BJP alliance would witness humiliating defeat, winning just 10 seats.

According to ‘Punjab Poll Final Scenario’ shared by Ajay Maken, Congress would win 19 seats in Majha region, 30 in Malwa region and 18 in Doaba region. AAP will have a little edge over Congress in Malwa where it is expected to win 35 seats. AAP won’t open its account in Majha region and would win 5 seats in Doaba region, suggested Ajay Maken. The SAD-BJP alliance is projected to win 6 and 4 seats in Majha and Malwa regions respectively.
Over 75 per cent of Punjab’s over 1.98 crore voters cast their ballot for 117 assembly segments on February 4. As many as 1,145 candidates, including 81 women and a lone transgender are in fray in Punjab where the Akali Dal-BJP alliance has ruled for two straight terms. Both Congress and AAP are hoping to cash in from an anti-incumbency factor as surveys point to a cliffhanger between the two parties. The counting of votes and results will be out on March 11.
