It’s Raksha Bandhan! The beautiful holiday that celebrates the unique bond between siblings. Raksha Bandhan honors the relationship that brothers and sisters share by reminding you of the importance of your siblings. You share DNA with your sibling, they will be there for your long after your parents—and are the only ones who will understand why your parents drive you insane.

This  year let’s start the celebrations with a look back at Bollywood’s most memorable on-screen siblings!

1. “Yeh Dillagi”

Some of you may not remember “Yeh Dillagi” but you’ll definitely remember Saif Ali Khan’s hit dance number “Ole Ole” from this film! Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar play siblings Vicky and Vijay Saigal respectively. Of course, Vicky (Khan) is the younger womanizing and fun loving brother while Vicky (Kumar) is the responsible older brother. The two have an easy relationship and very deep love for each other. They end up falling for the same girl—Sapna (Kajol) the driver’s daughter—and that is when things go awry.

With their mother disapproving of Sapna, both brothers try to sacrifice their love for Sapna so the other can stay happy.

2. “Josh”

Although they have played lovers in films, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s best chemistry were as twins in the film “Josh.” The duo plays orphans, Max and Shirley. Twins who love each other dearly, and as head of the Eagles gang, Max will go to any length to protect his sister. Even to this day, King Khan and beauty queen Bachchan’s love in “Josh” is one of the most memorable sibling relationships in Bollywood!

3. “Hum Saath Saath Hai”

Who could ever forget the enormous loving, always singing, can’t-live-with-out-each-other-for-5-minutes family of “Hum Saath Saath Hai.” Ramkishan and second wife, Mamta’s joint family consisted of 3 sons, a daughter, and their respective spouses/love interests. The film revolves around the strength of the love between siblings as their mother tries to find balance as a mother and step-mother. Mohnish Behl, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Neelam are the ideal siblings—even their fights are filled with love!

4. “Fiza”

Listed as one of Karishma Kapoor’s best performance, “Fiza” is the story of a sister trying to find her younger brother who goes missing after the Bombay riots in 1993. Unfortunately when she does find her younger brother Amaan—played by Hrithik Roshan—she comes to know that he has joined a terrorist group.

5. “My Brother…Nikhil”

“My Brother..Nikhil” revolves around sexuality and HIV and presents the topics with a powerful sibling relationship. Sanjay Suri is abandoned by his family, community, and friends when he comes out to them about being gay and HIV positive. It is the love of his sister, Juhi Chawla that keeps him together. Apart from his boyfriend, Suri’s character only has his sister—once again proving that only a sibling can understand and love you always.

6. “Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na”

Prateik Babbar and Genelia D’souza portray a realistic sibling relationship in this hit film. It’s not always fun and games—you guys may nothing in common and always fight. But don’t forget that they are the ones who will be there for your when no one else is. Babbar and D’souza showed the sweet and sour side of sibling love perfectly in this film!

7. “HouseFull”

In the romantic comedy “Housefull” Deepika Padukone and Arjun Rampal play siblings for the first time. These gorgeous stars even look alike with their tall, slender physiques, powerful eyes, and adorable matching dimples. Rampal plays an over-protective older brother who will resort to any tactic to protect his sister and be sure that she will always be loved. Their sweet relationship brought some reality to the otherwise outrageous film.

8. “Dil Dhadakne Do”

Bold, strong and independent Ayesha Mehra is played by Priyanka Chopra and her fun-loving, carefree younger brother Kabir Mehra played by Ranveer Singh. The two have played opposite each other before but their sibling chemistry was simply perfect! Ayesha and Kabir have a very realistic relationship—no over the top drama.

The two fight, cover for each other, tease each other, sacrifice for each other and of course love each other dearly. The sibling bond in this film was so strong that even after the film Chopra and Singh still treat each other like siblings, Chopra even calls Ranveer “bhai.”

9. “Dilwale”

The romantic comedy “Dilwale” featured 2 sets of siblings, sisters Kajol and Kriti Sanon, as well as brothers Shah Rukh Khan and Varun Dhawan. However, it was the strong protective bond between Khan and Dhawan that touched viewers hearts. The goofy Dhawan and wise Khan make the perfect pair!

10. “Iqbal”

It’s not always brothers that do the protecting and supporting, sisters are just as powerful supporters. In “Iqbal” it is Iqbal’s (Shreyas Talpade) younger sister, played by Shweta Prasad, who protects her older brother. Prasad’s character is her brother’s biggest supporter, protector, confidante—and since Iqbal is disabled—his ears and voice as well.

11. “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”

“Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” is the story of real-life athlete Milkha Singh (played by Farhan Akhtar). Even though the film was focused on Singh’s career one could not overlook the influence his sister had on his life. Isri Kaur, played by Divya Dutta, barely voiced a complaint when her abusive husband sent his anger towards her—yet she would not stand it when her husband became violent towards her younger brother Milkha. Ishri Kaur is immensely proud of her younger brother and loves him in an almost motherly fashion.

Akhtar and Dutta are talented actors but their relationship as siblings was endearing to see.

12. “Sarabjit”

The most epic of sibling love, a true story of an Indian woman trying to release her brother from jail when he mistakenly crosses the border to Pakistan. Tragic, powerful, and filled with love, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Randeep Hooda teaches us how ideal siblings should be—the story of Sarabjit brings tears in our eyes and love in our hearts for we all should pray to have a loving sibling like this.

We wish you all a lovely Raksha Bandhan from our family to yours!
