Digital communication and related problems go hand in hand. After the launch of every new technology, software or product, users have come up with some teething troubles; a step forward, issues may crop up even after many years. But there are some solutions to such problems. Though the solutions are not permanent, people can still rely to fix the issue for time being.

Apple AirPods were released along with iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus; since it was something new to iPhone users, AirPods quickly gained popularity among users. However, iPhone owners had to face many issues with their new AirPods.

Few of the initial problems every iPhone user has to face were cleaning AirPods, battery drain issue in AirPods charging case, pairing AirPods with Android and Windows devices etc.

Of late, iPhone and iPad users have been facing a fresh issue of AirPods getting disconnected during calls. Now this can be a serious trouble for any smartphone user as they can be in the middle of a serious conversation with family members, friends or colleagues. What graver a situation is that users have not seen any pattern or symptoms of the issue. What is even worse is that users have experienced back to back disconnections of AirPods from their iPhones and Pads. This has put every user in the soup.

It has also been noticed that AirPods are disconnecting during calls only, i.e. person to person calls that take place on WhatsApp, Skype and on regular carrier calls. This is strange as the users don’t face this issue while listening to songs on Apple Music or any other audio activities like listening audiobooks, playing games or watching movies.

Apart from disconnection issues, users have also reported sound issues while listening to audio contents and talking on third-party calling apps like WhatsApp and Skype.

In any case, the issue needs to be resolved quickly, otherwise there is no point in spending more than 100 bucks after AirPods.

This information details how you can fix iPhone AirPods disconnecting calls issue.

How to Fix Apple AirPods Disconnecting Calls Issue

Since AirPods are working on the latest technology, nobody has an expert advice to fix the call disconnection issue. There are a few workarounds, tricks, and tips you can follow.

Charge Your AirPods

One of the primary steps you need to take is to charge your AirPods to the full. Put the pods into the charging case and then keep the case near to your iPhone to check the battery level. A window on your phone gives you detail about the battery status of AirPods and the charging case.

You can also check battery status from the Batteries widget from notification center on your iPhone/iPad; or simply ask Siri ‘How’s the battery on my AirPods?’

Turn Bluetooth ON/OFF

Launch Settings → Bluetooth → Turn Bluetooth OFF → Turn Bluetooth ON after 15-20 seconds.

Check Microphone Settings of AirPods

Step #1: Open the AirPods case.

Step #2: Launch Settings and then tap on Bluetooth.

Step #3: Choose your AirPods and next, tap on (i) icon.

Step #4: You need to select Microphone from the menu option.

If the default is Automatic, it means that your AirPods are working as microphone.

Step #5: Here, you should make an attempt to change it to Always Left or Always Right.

This will set the microphone to use either left or right pod.

Reset AirPods through AirPod Case

Step #1: First off, put your AirPods into the case.

Step #2: Close the lid of the case and open it again after 15 odd seconds.

Step #3: Now check the status light of AirPods; the light can be seen between the two pods rested in the case. The light should flash white.

Next, while the AirPods are in the case, press and hold case’s back set-up button for 15 seconds at least; release the button when you see the status light flashing amber for a few times and then flashing white.

Reset Network Settings on Your iPhone

Settings → General → Reset → Reset Network Settings.

You may need to enter your passcode to reset network settings on your iPhone. And also note that this action can wipe out all your mobile and Wi-fi network settings and passwords you have saved. It will also delete VPN settings.

Forget AirPods

Step #1: Open Settings on your iPhone.

Step #2: Tap on Bluetooth option.

Step #3: Choose your AirPods.

Step #4: Tap on (i) icon.

Step #5: Next, tap ‘Forget This Device’.

Now, you need to restart your iPhone.

Follow the on-screen instructions to reconnect and re-pair the AirPods. At last, press and hold the reset button on the back of the AirPod case for about 15 seconds and release the button.

Restart iPhone

It is pretty simple; just press and hold sleep/wake button until the slider appears to turn off your phone. Drag the slider from left to right to power off your device. Now, press and hold that sleep/wake button again until you see Apple logo on screen.

Force Restart iPhone

If you are using iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, you cannot force restart your device with the old method; it is changed.

On your iPhone 6s and earlier iPhones, press and hold home button and sleep/wake button simultaneously for at least 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo.

Change Outputs and Inputs on Mac

Step #1: Launch System Preferences and choose Sound on Mac.

Step #2: Click Output tab.

Step #3: Select AirPods.

Step #4: Next, you should choose Input tab.

Step #5: Select anything But AirPods.

This will disable AirPods mic but generates high quality sound from AirPods.

Turn Off Automatic Ear Detection

Settings → Bluetooth → Select AirPods → Turn Automatic Ear Detection OFF.

This will stop your AirPods from sensing when they are in your ears. The AirPods will play audio whether or not you wear them in ears. When Automatic Ear Detection is ON and your AirPods are not in your ears, the audio will play through your iPhone’s speakers.

Unpair your Apple Watch

Sometimes, restoring your iPhone can solve the problem. It has been found by many users that un-pairing your Apple Watch can fix the issue of AirPods disconnecting during calls. This is not a permanent solution but you can always execute such tricks to save some time. If you are using older version of Apple Watch with the latest iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, you need to be carefully while pairing Apple Watch with new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

Syncing Troubles

Many users complain of syncing problems. Such issues include performance of only one AirPod. It seems that both AirPods are working in good condition for the first couple of days; but after that, some AirPods go out of sync and only work when used separately.

If all the above solutions do not give you any result, take your AirPods and iPhone to the Apple Support and ask for help.
