When deciding on a content management system or CMS for your company, which CMS is better for your business – Joomla or WordPress? I recently talked about this in a previous post and this is the second follow up article to that discussion.  While WordPress is popular with bloggers, Joomla can be a more powerful portal or community type site.  Both CMS systems have many similarities.  Joomla and WordPress overlap each other in functionality in several areas and can be extended beyond their original purposes with the use of plugins, which are commonly found online. Both are free to use, with many hosting providers offering them as a built in option in their web tools sections. Both Joomla and WordPress have a large community of users online who socially share their tips and tricks.  If they are both so similar, then you must ask yourself why does it matter which one you choose?

If you are building a blog, then WordPress might be for you.  If you want more functionality, and you want to create a community or network, membership area, newsroom, forums, articles, and include input from external authors then Joomla is for you. Joomla allows for an easy navigation of its interface, and it doesn’t require any knowledge of html.  You can find many good books on Joomla that will allow you to set up quickly and easily.  You can set up articles to expire after a time, activate dates, set breadcrumbs, put power in your admin section by allocating resources, and much more. For both the beginner and the expert, Joomla puts a lot of power in your hands.

Joomla is a powerful CMS tool that offers multi-database support, including Microsoft SQL server compatibility. It offers automated script updates and an improved search function within the article editor.  More reasons to choose Joomla over WordPress is the ease-of-use and mode-of-operation.  Joomla supports sitemaps and mass emails whereas WordPress does not.  WordPress can be extended to handle sitemaps and mass emails by means of plugins and specialized code, however, with Joomla, these are built in functions.

While they have equally powerful editors, in Joomla the article editor comes with a lot of flashy features including formatting tools, SEO tools, and metadata tools.  WordPress may have more built in themes to customize your site with, but Joomla is better at handling overall website management.  While it can depend on the user, Joomla’s Settings and Configuration mechanism has many more options than that of WordPress.  Here you can tweak your email settings, display your menus, article features, and improve your layout.  These are features that can’t be beat on Joomla!

Another comparison is that for your SEO functions, WordPress can offer this by means of extensions and plugins while Joomla has loaded SEO natively. Built-ins are always easier than hunting down the right extension or help for the right plug in.  Both have great support in the community, and offer elaborate documentation if you need the help.  But for Joomla you can always find extra help if you head to the Joomla! Developer Network or Joomfish for support, along with their own community magazine you can sign up for.  The verdict is that both Joomla and WordPress are good, but if you want more built-in functionality, quality documentation, and less third-party plugins, then Joomla is the way to go.
