Wondering what your peers have done this summer? Need some ideas on where to apply next summer? From finance to fashion, these four students who interned at four different companies share with you their coolest experiences and most important things learned this summer.

Samuel Xiao

School: CC

Year: 2017

Major: Financial Economics

Company Interned At: GSV Capital

The Internship: I supported the team on potential investments, sourced deals, and performed market and industry analysis. Researched up-and-coming tech companies and listened to pitches.

Most useful thing/best work tip learned: Positive attitude.

One cool thing or fun fact/story: First day on the job, met Ashlee Vance in the office.

Pooja Pandey

School: BC

Year: 2017

Major: Economics and Psychology

Company Interned At: The Athena Center for Leadership Studies and Power to Fly

The Internship: At Athena, I was an Entrepreneurship Intern and worked on projects that targeted different groups of women (high-schoolers, women of color, women in tech, women working in traditional corporate settings, women in or pursuing startups) in helping them achieve their career and entrepreneurial goals. Some examples of this are our work on The Athena Pledge, an initiative to increase representation of women-led and women-backed startups in the incubator and accelerator space. At Power to Fly, I am a Revenue intern working under the Chief Revenue Officer. My tasks so far have included doing competitive analysis, research, cost benefit analyses, and helping the CRO in basically anything.

Most useful thing/best work tip learned: A no-bullshit environment is intimidating at first but ultimately leads to a more productive and straight-up team – when a coworker or boss is forward with her expectations and tasks, it leads to effective results. Also #remoteworks – working remotely has been a blessing and I like that our company practices what it preaches.

One cool thing or fun fact/story: There was one Tuesday evening where after work my boss took me to a 3 hour open bar on the rooftop of the Gansevoort with executives of New York-based startups and that was chill. Oh and when we were invited to Daybreaker, a morning rave in sick locations around the city and the DJ was from Burning Man. Raving at 6 a.m. with a ninja carrot and ninja pea promoting healthy eating was definitely an experience.

Dan Schlosser

School: SEAS

Year: 2015

Major: Computer Science

Company interned at: Google

The Internship: Last summer, I was at Google as an Associate Product Manager Intern on the Polymer team. As a product manager, I was responsible for making sure that everything that needed to get done, did. This means strategy and coordinating between teams, but it also mean doing the work that no one else is willing to do in order to get the product out of the door.

Most useful thing/best work tip learned: The APM program taught me the Google Calendar is insanely powerful, and a great tool for staying productive. After my internship, I put all of my commitments on my Google Calendar, and it keeps me focused and organized.

One cool fact/story: I split my time between the Google San Francisco office and the Mountain View office, which meant that I got the best of living in the city and having access to Google’s main campus. Working in the San Francisco office was especially a treat. Because the office is smaller, there is a stronger sense of community, better food (made in smaller batches), and a beautiful view of the Bay Bridge. I recommend it!

Rachel Kalson

School: BC

Year: 2016

Major: Political Science

Company interned at: Ralph Lauren

The Internship: I was part of a corporate internship program with 34 other college students. I worked in sales one month and retail development the second and it was such an awesome experience. I went on corporate walk-throughs in flagship department stores in New York and sat in on important meetings. I learned how to read floorplans (harder than you’d think) and gained a lot of insight into the inner-workings of a global business. Most importantly, however, I got a 50% discount on Ralph Lauren brands (including Club Monaco) and my wardrobe is now fully stocked for fall. Thanks, Ralph!

Most useful thing/best work tip learned: In a meeting with the VP of Wholesale marketing, I was told: “remember that your first job is not your last.” Every time I panic because I’m still not 100% su   re what I want to do, I hear those words and they are so insanely helpful.

One cool fact/story: I worked on a group project with other interns and we were tasked with designing an Olympics related initiative (Ralph Lauren designs the ceremony uniforms). After two months of preparation, we got to present to David Lauren in a tiny room with just a few other people. It might not have been Ralph, but next of kin works for me.
