For Immediate Release
CHICAGO (October 20, 2016) – The Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone MedicalCenter and Imerman Angels announce a new partnership to bring emotional support services to individuals impacted by cancer.
Imerman Angels, currently celebrating its 10-year anniversary, is a global non-profit
organization providing free, one-on- one emotional support to individuals battling cancer,
survivors and caregivers. Support is provided to patients and caregivers by partnering them with
a Mentor Angel – a volunteer who has been through the exact same cancer experience-based on
criteria such as type of cancer, stage, age and lifestyle. Mentor Angels truly understand the
challenges facing their mentee because they have already experienced them.
Since its inception in 2006, Imerman Angels has become the global leader in providing
personalized connections that foster one-on- one support among cancer fighters, survivors and
caregivers – with more than 29,500 connections made in all 50 states and more than 60
countries. The organization has been featured in TEDx talks, as well as numerous national media,
including CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, WGN and the Wall Street Journal.
“Our partnership with the Perlmutter Cancer Center will allow Imerman Angels to introduce
more cancer fighters, caregivers and survivors to our critical services. The devoted doctors and
staff at the Perlmutter Cancer Center understand the importance of the emotional component of
the cancer journey, so our partnership is a perfect match. Banding together, our two
organizations will greatly enhance the quality of life for those who have been impacted by
cancer,” says Imerman Angels CEO and Executive Director Ben Bornstein, himself a three-time
cancer survivor.
The Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone offers a multidisciplinary approach to patient
care, with a translational research program that brings together laboratory scientists and clinical
researchers. This combination allows the institution to deliver the latest advances in cancer care
while creating a nurturing environment. Recently, NYU Langone was ranked in the top 10 in the
nation in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals 2016–2017 Honor Roll”, and its Perlmutter
Cancer Center is an NCI-designated cancer center, one of 69 nationwide.
“Partnering with Imerman Angels gives new meaning to the personalized care offered at the
Perlmutter Cancer Center,” says Benjamin G. Neel, MD, PhD, director of Perlmutter. “The support
and comfort provided by Imerman Angels will not only benefit our patients, but also the cancer
community as a whole. We’re delighted to welcome and add this new level of support into our
already well-rounded patient care program.”
