General Information:

California State University, Fresno is one of 23 campuses in the California State University System. Metropolitan Fresno, with a multi-ethnic population of over 600,000, is located in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley on the western edge of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The campus is within easy driving distance of San Francisco, Los Angeles, Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, the Monterey Peninsula, Lake Tahoe, beaches, sailing, lakes, and numerous ski resorts. Fresno boasts one of the most reasonable housing markets in California and offers a wide array of locally grown fruits and produce.

Salary:

Salary Range $125,000 to 180,000, commensurate with experience and credentials.

Overview:

The Director will report to the Vice President for Student Affairs and is responsible for the management of a comprehensive Student Health Program for a campus of 22,000 students which is housed in an attractive and up-to-date outpatient facility located near the center of the campus.

The Director leads and manages an accredited, multifaceted healthcare program of full-time physicians (and part-time physicians/consultants), nurse practitioners, nurses, medical assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, laboratory technicians, x-ray technicians, and support staff. In addition, the Director will provide supervision and oversight to Wellness Services Program and a Psychological Services clinical staff, who also supervise graduate student counseling interns. Total staffing in the agency is approximately 37.

The UHPS provides a broad range of primary medical care and mental health services, as well as prevention and wellness outreach services. The Director is responsible for providing overall administrative direction, budget oversight, and supervision as well as collaborating with other on and off campus department/agencies to ensure a high level of care and quality services are provided to students. The focus of the UHPS is both on the provision of direct medical care as well as providing students information/skills to develop a healthy lifestyle.

Position Summary:

Primary Duties and Responsibilities Include but are not limited to the following:

• Provide leadership, management and direction to a comprehensive student health care program.

• Ensure compliance with California State University Trustee policy, Collective Bargaining Agreements, privacy practices, federal, state and local laws, regulatory and licensing requirements.

• Directly supervise program managers (MPP), the Coordinator of the Counseling Program, department heads, the administrative office, and clinical staff. Indirectly supervise, Health Promotion and Wellness Program, In-house Clinical Laboratory, In-house x-ray, In-house pharmacy, student assistants, contracted personnel, and approximately 37 employees in accordance with University guidelines.

• Conduct program evaluations to ensure quality improvement and quality patient care.

• Manage a complex budget with multiple revenue sources. – Initiate and recommend all personnel actions.

• Formulate and implement policies and procedures.

• Formulate long-term strategic plans in concert with the mission of the University and the Division of Student Affairs.

• Support staff development opportunities.

• Facilitate the work of the Student Health Advisory Committee.

• Participate in coordinating campus responses to emergencies and disasters. – Participate on division and campus committees and serve as the health services liaison with the campus and the local community.

• Other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree or higher in a health-related discipline (nursing, public health), in a business-related field like Business Administration or Health Care Administration, in education, or in a related field or a terminal degree in medicine (M.D. or D.O.).

• Individuals who are required to have a license to practice must possess pertinent California licensure and certifications (Board Certification, DEA, CPR, etc.).

• Five years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a health care organization.

• Excellent business sense, strong strategic management skills, and experience conducting program evaluation.

• Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to facilitate open discussions and write clear and concise reports.

• Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with and respond to diverse constituencies in a cultural competent manner.

• Successful experience supervising and evaluating employees, resolving conflicts, problem solving and encouraging a diverse staff to work well together.

• Evidence of a strong personal commitment to diversity.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of nationally recognized accreditation standards, processes and health care models.

• Management experience in a collective bargaining environment.

• Experience in college health.
