The ACLU of Maryland (ACLU-MD) seeks a dynamic individual to join the Communications Program as Communications Associate.

About the ACLU of Maryland

Founded in 1931, the ACLU-MD is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with over 14,000 members and supporters.  We have two offices in Maryland: Our main office in Baltimore and a field office in Takoma Park, Maryland.  The ACLU-MD is an affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The Communications Associate will be able to work out of both.

Our 18 staff members, along with hundreds of volunteers, work daily to achieve our mission using litigation, legislation and public education on a broad range of constitutional issues, including racial justice, criminal justice, free speech, religious freedom, reproductive rights, LGBT rights, privacy and voting rights.  For a fuller view of our broad agenda, visit http://www.aclu-md.org.

About Our Communications Department

The ACLU-MD’s Communications Department spearheads the organization’s public and social media outreach work, and oversees all contact with the press. The department also launches multi-media advocacy campaigns; publishes newsletters, reports and other materials; runs the organization’s websites; and keeps members of the staff and board apprised of their colleagues’ work.

Responsibilities:

The Communications Assistant will report to the Communications Director and will work closely with the organization’s legal, legislative, and field staff to perform the following functions:

• Write targeted, effective messages for our email list and social media networks; • Layout and test elist messages • Research online communications tools, opportunities and best practices; • Participate in creating cohesive and effective press and social media strategies; • Draft press releases, advisories, and talking points memos; • Maintain communications calendar; • Maintain press lists; • Coordinate and track inquiries from reporters; • Develop material for the ACLU-MD’s websites; • Keep the staff updated on news coverage relevant to ACLU-MD’s work; • Assist the Communications Director with administrative tasks, writing, and research; • Attend public outreach events as needed; • Other tasks as assigned by the Communications Director.

Qualifications:

• A profound and well-articulated commitment to civil liberties and social justice; • Experience in online communications and advocacy, news media, and public relations; • Excellent persuasive writing, editing, research, and phone skills; • Experience writing email copy; • Experience in and a keen eye for design, page layout and general presentation; • Web savvy and experience in the use of social media and the blogosphere; • Detail oriented approach with strong follow through, demonstrated ability to solve problems, and ability to meet tight deadlines;  • A team player who possesses a sense of diplomacy and humor; • Proficiency with MS Office programs; • Experience with desktop publishing programs and web design programs a plus; • HTML experience preferred; • A college degree or equivalent; • Access to personal transportation and availability on weeknights and weekends; • Spanish language skills a plus.
