The Crossfit training method has become a phenomenon in the fitness world. This hardcore discipline originated in 2000 as the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies, military special operations units, and champion martial artists. It now helps other professional athletes, celebrities, stay-at-home moms, and anyone with the dedication to get in shape. Today, there are thousands of Crossfit affiliates around the world. NYC alone offers over 10, but this list will feature the top-rated locations, including the UWS!

Crossfit NYC: UWS & The Black Box

Crossfit NYC is the oldest and largest Crossfit gym in New York City. Crossfit NYC has two locations: Upper West Side (157 Columbus Avenue, lower level) and The Black Box (50 West 28th Street, second floor).



Both locations offer over 300 classes a week, which range from beginner to advanced. If you’re new to Crossfit, it’s recommended that you sign up for a free intro class. If you like what you see and love how you feel, complete five more Elements classes which are designed to teach you the basics of Crossfit in a fun and friendly environment. Once you’re comfortable, you can move on to Crossfit NYC’s signature WOD (Workout of the Day) classes. These are taught in a small-group setting, and consist of a warm-up, some skill or strength work, a workout, and a cool down. Coming to three or four WOD classes a week will get you in the best shape of your life!

A Crossfit NYC membership is $199 per month, with no contracts, no initiation fees, and no cancellation fees. Crossfit NYC also claims they’re the best price in the city!

Crossfit East River

Crossfit East River is a 2,500-square-foot “box” in the East Village. Located at 647 East 9th Street, Crossfit East River has one philosophy: you are the machine. You won’t find treadmills or ellipticals here – your body is all you will need. They are fully equipped to do Crossfit and nothing else.



At Crossfit East River, you are never pressured to do more than you can, but are encouraged and pushed to do your best. It is mandatory to complete eight Foundations sessions during your first month at Crossfit East River. This ensures that you learn the Crossfit basics and are set up for long-term training success. These classes run on Mondays and Wednesdays at 12:30 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 pm, and Saturdays at 10:30 am. Foundations is $175. After you graduate, you can do drop-in classes for $20 or buy one of their packages ($175-$250).

If you don’t want to go through the Foundations sessions, drop-in and try SweatRiver – a 45-minute conditioning session designed to get your metabolism fired up and your blood flowing! Crossfit East River offers a small members only area. They do not offer open gym sessions, so you won’t be able to work out on your own.

Crossfit Concrete Jungle

Crossfit Concrete Jungle is all about a family community. Located at 309 East 94th Street on the 5th floor, CFCJ is not just a gym – it’s a diverse community that trains together and plays together.



Similar to many Crossfit gyms, CFCJ strongly encourages their On-Ramp program for beginners, as it gets everyone up to speed. This Crossfit facility also offers bootcamps, private coaching, boxing, and even a kids program. A hardcore program that CFCJ offers is called Synagogue of Strength (SOS). This program worships four main barbell lifts: The Squat, Press, Deadlift, and Bench. Take any one of these programs and become a Crossfitter in no time.

CFCJ has many unique memberships and plans. A CFCJ All-Access month-to-month pass is $300/mo, a regular Crossfit 12 month membership is $225/mo, and one class alone is $30. Bonus: they offer a 15% discount to military, police, firemen, and school teachers, and a 10% discount to students and spouses/partners.
