Radiance Award, Lincoln Square Synagogue, Suzan Tillotson, IALD
Tillotson Design Associates, New York, NY USA

Luminaries of the lighting profession gathered at the San Diego Air and Space Museum on 27 April to honour the winners of the 33rd Annual International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) International Lighting Design Awards. Seventeen projects from eight countries were on display –including religious spaces, memorials, façades, and even a gas station. Taken together, the winners represent some of the most innovative and inspiring work found anywhere in the world of architectural lighting design.

The highest point score winner across all categories, in addition to receiving an Award of Excellence for their project, receives the IALD Radiance Award for Excellence in Lighting Design. Winners of the Radiance Award do not know in advance of their Radiance Award-winning status prior to the evening—only that they should be present at the evening’s award ceremony.

Accepting the Radiance Award for Excellence in Lighting Design was part of the project team from Tillotson Design Associates for theLincoln Square Synagogue in New York, NY USA.The details of the project and comments from the judges, as well as briefs on all other winning projects, are included in separate releases with images and credits where approval has been given.

Of the seventeen projects recognized, one entry earned a Special Citation, thirteen earned Awards of Merit and three earned Awards of Excellence.

ABOUT THE IALD INTERNATIONAL LIGHTING DESIGN AWARDS

The IALD International Lighting Design Awards program is the longest-running awards program recognizing excellence in architectural lighting design. The program honours lighting design that reaches new heights, moves beyond the ordinary and represents excellence in aesthetic and technical design achievement. Judging is a rigorous and blind process; only those projects demonstrating consistent design quality and technical expertise receive award recognition after three straight days of judging.

With the conclusion of this awards cycle, IALD International Lighting Design Awards co-chair Rosemarie Allaire, IALD, of Rosemarie Allaire Lighting Design in Dana Point, CA USA, has completed her term as Awards chair, a position she has held for five years. She shared her enthusiasm for the awards program and the IALD judging process: “The vast body of work in our industry is astounding. To experience the breadth of projects submitted from around the world in just a few days is significant. It’s a pretty remarkable exchange among the judges –an occurrence I have been privileged to witness!”

Rosemarie’s co-chair Dawn Hollingsworth, FIALD, of Zuzink in Sherman Oaks, CA USA, shared Rosemarie’s respect for the hard work of the judges listed below. “I want to acknowledge the thoughtful and deliberate effort of the judges during the jury process,” Dawn said.” The submissions are so impressive, with creative and technical solutions. It is a challenge to review so many projects! The most exciting part is to witness so much global talent in the architectural lighting profession.”

The IALD is appreciative of our esteemed panel of seven judges. The judges include five IALD members at various experience levels, including a sustainability expert. An interior designer and architect join these five IALD members to complete the panel of seven judges.

JUDGING PROCESS

In the first phase of judging, the jury silently reviews the images from all projects –this year, there were more than210 projects to review, totalling more than 2,000 images. During the second round, judges view all the images for each project, this time while hearing the 100-word brief that accompanies each submission. A supermajority (a “yea” vote from five out of seven judges)is required for each project to move on to the next round.

After all projects have been reviewed at the 100-word level, the projects that have progressed to the third round are judged. The jury reviews each image or video along with the additional description provided by the submitter. For this phase, entrants have an additional400 words to describe their project in total, ideally with a few sentences describing what each image is intended to convey. After hearing the entire submission, the judges discuss the merits of each project before scoring privately.Scoring is quantitative, with each judge confidentially assigning a numeric value to each criterion. (A full list of judging criteria is available at iald.org.) Ballots are tallied and results kept confidential until judging concludes. There is no point during the process in which judges are made aware of where a specific project stands in terms of receiving an award.
