This month Barcelona hosts an exposition of word press, an important event attracting  the representatives of mass media photography from all over the world.

This exhibition offers a chance to discover the power of photography as a communications tool which is capable of transcending all borders. It features the prize-winning photographs from their prestigious international World Press Photo competition. Many of the photos in this exhibition form part of our collective memory and have become the defining images of important historic events.

World Press Photo – is the most prestigious international competition for photojournalists. It is an independent, nonprofit organization, based in Amsterdam (Netherlands).

In addition to selecting the World Press Photo of the Year, the contest determines winners in the following categories:

Another primary objective of the organization is to support professional photojournalism on a wide international scale through the World Press Photo Academy. It aims to stimulate developments in photojournalism, encourage the transfer of knowledge, help develop high professional standards in visual journalism and promote a free and unrestricted exchange of information. It organizes a number of educational projects throughout the world: seminars, workshops and the annual Joop Swart Masterclass.

In 2012, an international jury of the annual World Press Photo contest announced a photo of Samuel Aranda of Spain is the winner of Photo of the year 2011.

The first prize in 2011 was given to photographer Jodi Bieber from South Africa.

In 2007, 4,460 professional photographers from 124 countries submitted for the contest 78,083 photos.

All the prize-winning photographs are assembled into an exhibition in 45 countries during for one year, and published in yearbook. Over two million people go to a hundred different venues to see the images, and the yearbook is published in seven languages and distributed worldwide.
