(Thursday, 18th day of September 2014)

ILIGAN CITY, PHILIPPINES – The Office of the City Civil Registrar, this city, immediately acted on the written request of Bishop Elenito Galido, Diocese of Iligan and Missionary Sisters of the Holy Spirit (Spiritan Sisters) as co-sponsors, through Hon. Celso G. Regencia, City Mayor, to document and register the events of birth of Bajau cultural community pre-school children of Purok 4, Tambacan Iligan City.  The said children are presently enrolled without birth certificates at Eugenie Caps Day Care Center under the stewardship of Spiritan Sisters, this city.

A Registration Team under the Free Mobile Birth Registration Project was mobilized by the newly-appointed City Civil Registrar, MARIA PURA C. MASCARIÑAS to facilitate the compliance of all requirements for delayed registration of births and to validate the information sheets supplied by the Spiritan Sisters, through actual interview with the informants in their settlement area.

A total of 27 applications were validated.  Eleven (11) were born in Iligan City and 16 children were born out-of-town or outside the jurisdiction of Iligan civil registry.  Hence only 11 applications were duly acted upon for registration.  The rest are still-in-process of documentation for out-of-town reporting.

After registering the Iligan born children a formal Turnover Ceremony was held at the Barangay Tambacan, Iligan City Multi-Purpose Building, last September 16, 2014.  This marks the first batch of birth registration of Bajaus in Iligan City which created public awareness among them to register on time, the events of birth of their children at the local civil registry office.  They have now acquired the first right to bear a name and nationality and subsequently, avail other basic socio-economic rights and benefits of the government such as protection, education, health, work, travel and to be able to exercise their rights of suffrage upon reaching the voting age.

The ceremony was well attended by representatives of the City Civil Registrar’s Office(CCRO), Philippines Statistics Authority(PSA), National Commission for Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), Diocese of Iligan, Spiritan Sisters and Fathers, Office of the City Mayor and Sangguniang Panglungsod, Barangay and Purok LGU’s of Tambacan and parents of the registrants.

Certificates of Appreciation were presented to all invited guests, speakers and co-sponsors signed by City Civil Registrar, Maria Pura C. Mascariñas and Hon. City Mayor Regencia.(Miguel B. Muñez/CCR)
