How many grown adults, let alone children, know how to spell the word “jnana”? Most people do not even know what that word means. Well, little five-year-old Edith Fuller knew how to spell the word correctly. It was her 37th word at the Oklahoma Green County Regional Spelling Bee. Adorable Fuller just became the youngest person to ever qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. After winning the competition, little Edith, with a white bow in her blonde hair, took the stage and shared, “I feel thankful.”

Valerie Miller, a spokesperson from the Scripps National Spelling Bee told People magazine over email, “We congratulate Edith Fuller on her impressive performance at her regional bee in Tulsa. We celebrate her accomplishment along with the rest of the country. Edith creates even more awareness about our program and our purpose to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.”

Edith’s mother, Annie Fuller, said that her daughter is “very bright” and she was not over exaggerating at all. The young child beat 50 other contestants from all across Oklahoma at the regional competition. The Scripps National Spelling Bee spokesperson told People that she was spelling words like “croesus” and “sarsaparilla” and “baedeker.”

Annie Fuller told KJRH, “We were amazed to find that she really has a knack for spelling and can remember words that she’s seen or heard very easily.”

Edith’s spelling skills were discovered by her parents last summer. One night over dinner, Edith’s mother was quizzing her on spelling and asked her to try “restaurant.” Edith had never learned the word “restaurant.” Her parents were stunned when little Edith spelled the word perfectly!

Currently, Edith is being homeschooled and preparing for the greatest spelling competition in Washington D.C. that will take place May 30 and June 1. When asked what she will be doing in her free time, Edith responded, “Like play outside or play piano, maybe study animals.”
