State appeals court denies recusal request in Fairmont Terrace homicide case

A couple of hurdles in the path to a preliminary hearing in the Fairmont Terrace quadruple-murder case were cleared in court Tuesday, but more likely remain.

Two people pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal conspiracy charges connected to the use of false identification documents to obtain credit cards, store credits and merchandise in Oklahoma.

Rahamanh “Rock” Katumbusi, 38, of Sacramento, Calif., and Donmetra Voncil McKinley Sherman, 24, of Tulsa were both arrested in a June 13 traffic stop after a confidential informant contacted a Tulsa County sheriff’s deputy and alleged that Katumbusi was engaged in identity theft in Oklahoma, according to an FBI affidavit.

A warrant to search the vehicle was obtained, and deputies found several fictitious identification and credit cards as well as at least 17 new iPhones and at least 40 gift cards from various retailers, according to the affidavit.

The two were charged June 27 in a criminal complaint filed in Tulsa federal court. They pleaded guilty Tuesday to separate charges filed this month by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Katumbusi stated in his plea agreement that he obtained false identification cards containing the personal data of others and traveled to Tulsa, where he supplied Sherman with the cards.

He said during his plea hearing Tuesday that the pair traveled to the Oklahoma City area, where they obtained credit cards, store credit and cellphones using the fraudulent cards.

Sherman, whose first name has been spelled Denmetra on some documents, admitted in her plea agreement that Katumbusi gave her false driver’s licenses that featured her picture and “other peoples’ personal identification information.”

She stated in the document that “we used the false ID’s to obtain credit cards, store credit or merchandise.”

Katumbusi is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 23 by U.S. District Judge James Payne, while Sherman is slated to receive her punishment on Oct. 9 from U.S. Chief District Judge Gregory Frizzell.

Both defendants are free on bond until their sentencings but could face as much as 15 years in prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Trent Shores said the case is a product of a joint investigation among the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service.
