MOC Presents

“Our Multiplicity of Lives, Theories and Attitudes: Commensurability and Incommensurability In Psychoanalysis”

1:00 PM – 4:30 PM

3CEU/CE hours available

Can the multiplicity of theoretical and personal “scientific paradigms” within contemporary psychoanalysis, as well as the attitudes they foster  —on the level of theory as well as clinical practice—  be one of fruitful coexistence, interpenetration, and communication, despite apparent incommensurability between and among certain of such paradigms?  Or are we doomed in such multiplicity to be forever segregated and compartmentalized by our convictions, what they hold to be real, true and important, and the languages used to covey them? This conference explores these questions, expanding upon ways of inquiring into, and conceptualizing, the nature of any psychotherapist’s scientific paradigm—his/her organizing convictions, values, and language. Coburn and Maduro argue that highlighting and working within a sense of respect for the personal, historical nature of our paradigms, and the discrepancies between them, is a substantial source of increasing vitality and aliveness within the analytic dyad and our field at large.
