An IBM Research Staff Member (RSM) is a prestigious appointment in the research community. IBM Research has a long and distinguished history of invention and innovation in science and engineering.

In 2015 IBM Research and the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) announced a major expansion as part of STFC’s Hartree Centre at Daresbury. The central aim of this collaboration is to bring researchers from IBM together with STFC and UK industry to accelerate adoption of new and existing research outcomes.

IBM is building a new team, based at Daresbury, as part of this work. There are numerous opportunities as IBM Research Staff Members in the Daresbury team.

As an IBM RSM you will be expected to contribute to or lead a program in engineering, services, or science with significant positive impact. The program could be months to years in duration and involves everything from understanding the fundamental challenge of a problem to transitioning the solution to operational use in industry via IBM or external partners.

An RSM is effective in generating innovative ideas and concepts while performing advanced scientific or engineering tasks resulting in original and creative scientific or engineering achievements in a specific discipline.

For the team in Daresbury we are looking for researchers with a very strong background in computer science or the application of high performance computing in their discipline. Multi-disciplinary research experience is highly desirable.

Required:

PhD/DPhil in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics or similar disciplines

Recent, relevant, publications record in high quality, peer reviewed journals and conferences

Currently working in one of the above fields

A clear understanding of the state-of-the-art in their field of research and of the current challenges and opportunities in that, and related, areas

Significant experience of high performance computing as a system designer/developer or as a user of large systems

Strong interpersonal skills, excellent presentation skills, experience or working in research teams

Able and willing to relocate to the IBM Research team in Daresbury, Cheshire, UK

Highly desirable:

Experience of technologies such as MPI, machine learning, – needs more….

Experience of translating their research outcomes towards operational use via products, services, or working with external partners

International research experience, ideally working as part of a multi-national team

Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary research team

Team leadership experience

An RSM may manage or technically direct other RSMs, engineers, and/or technical support personnel. The key elements are: IMPACT (inside or outside IBM), LEADERSHIP (technical and managerial) and TEAMWORK (within Research, with other IBM divisions and with the scientific community). Recognizing the diversity of interest, skills and experience, there will be a wide variation of contribution in each of these areas.
