Mercer is one of the world’s largest HR consultancy firms, every year they release its Quality of Living Index, which looks at the cities that provide the best quality of life. It also made us look into the cities worst for living.

According to Mercer, the ranking covers all aspects and is carried out annually in order to help multinational companies and employers to set their wages accordingly and in fair game for the employees working on international assignments.

Under eyeing 450 cities across the world, following metrics were taken in account by Mercer to create the list of best quality of life cities, thus exposing worst cities as well:

• Political and social environment

• Economic environment

• Socio-cultural environment

• Medical and health considerations

• Schools and education

• Public services and transportation

• Recreation

• Consumer goods

• Housing

• Natural environment

Mercer made a list of 230 countries and Business Insider took a look at the bottom 29 in the world.

No. 29. Karachi, Pakistan – It is world’s most populous metropolitan city and also one of the largest city, but due to political conditions it is also one of the most violent city. Crimes like kidnapping and muggings are very common.

No. 28. Tehran, Iran —With high poverty levels, Tehran despite of sanctions being lifted on the country, still is socially instable. Committed crimes include kidnapping, theft, fraud, money laundering, and drug trafficking.

No. 27. Lome, Togo —Togo’s largest city has very high unemployment rates. The infrastructure is deteriorating, and the living conditions are not up to the standard.

No. 26. Tashkent, Uzbekistan — It is a breeding ground for terrorism. The government has been putting in efforts to counter Islamic extremism. In 2015, the US embassy came under attack here for the first time in 11 years.

No. 25. Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire — Warnings have been issued via British embassy for people to avoid traveling to the capital of Ivory Coast until it’s very important. The city and country have higher risks of terrorism.

No. 24. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — People there are suffering from extreme poverty but the real estate industry is at boom. After the killings of students and farmers over building plans the social conditions there are not stable between the people and government.

No. 23. Ashgabat, Turkmenistan — The city is under mismanagement of the state and suffering shortages of chronic water where the temperature went as high as 116.96 degrees Farenheit in 2015.

No. 22. Harare, Zimbabwe — Robert Mugabe here is leading the despotic government. Mugabe has appealed for $1.6 billion to aid for grain and staple food as 75% of maize crop is failing there and the city is struck with poverty.

No. 21. Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan — The country is suffering with poverty and terrorism. The government is continuously busy fight ISIS – also known as Daesh.

No. 20. Lagos, Nigeria — Students kidnaps, murders and personal safety is always at risk in the city. The country’s largest city fights environmental threats annually like riptides.

No. 19 (joint). Abuja, Nigeria — The British Foreign office tells people traveling there that they could get kidnapped or be caught in violent incidents and terrorism. The city suffers with intercommunal violence causing high crime rates.

No. 18 Dushanbe, Tajikistan — The inadequate infrastructure keeps people from investing there and doing business, also World Bank warns against it. Poverty and energy shortage are also major issues.

No. 17. Dhaka, Bangladesh — Dhaka being one of the densely populated city in the world is backed by the textile industry. However, world governments and charities have always criticized human rights, working conditions and local poverty in the city.

No. 16. Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso — Terrorism is at peak in the city. An Al Qaeda bombing on a popular hotel killed 29 people earlier this year.

No. 15. Tripoli, Libya — The city has been caught up in a war between two rival groups, even the airport was destroyed in the riots last summer. Due to its immediacy to Europe migrants and refugees come there in large numbers, however all main embassies in the city have been closed.

No. 14. Niamey, Niger — Local poverty, anti-government protests and high levels of corruption in government are the reasons behind the city making into this list.

No. 13. Antananarivo, Madagascar — Political instability is one hurdle in the development of the city that depends upon its agricultural sector for economic growth.

No. 12. Bamako, Mali — The city has been on the hit list of terrorist attacks, the Radisson Blue Hotel attack in which Islamist militants killed 20 out of 170 hostages was the beginning of terrorism last year.

No. 11. Nouakchott, Mauritania — The city is filled with slums due to large population, droughts and poverty. The city became one of the largest city in the Sahara growing after 1958.

No. 10. Conakry, Guinea — Violent crimes, protests and strikes have inflicted chaos in the city and punctured personal safety of the citizens.

No. 9. Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo — Non-governmental organizations have been trying to aid relief in the city and country, the cultural revolutionist and autonomist conflicts are common.

No. 8. Brazzaville, Congo — People have been killed by the police in riots and protests against government’s corruption.

No. 7. Damascus, Syria — Local and emigrants both are living under threats of violence and terrorist attacks in the city.

No. 6. N’Djamena, Chad — The militant Islamist group Boko Haram is dominating in the poorest country of the world and its city. The group has also been involved in conducting frequent suicide bombings.

No. 5. Khartoum, Sudan —Terrorists have taken over and the city is the 2md largest of Sudan and major recruitment cell of ISIS – Daesh.

No. 4. Port-au-Prince, Haiti — Rapes, robberies, violent crimes are all part of the city life, terrorism has become endemic in the city.

No. 3. Sanaa, Yemen — The proxy war between Saudia and Iran has made the city a battleground and it is shattered with the airstrikes by Saudia Arabia.

No. 2. Bangui, Central African Republic — Violent denominational clashes occur habitually in the area, the city is very poor and people are dependent on aid for survival.

No. 1. Baghdad, Iraq — Under threat from ISIS – Daesh right now, the city has been under wars and seen a lot of collateral and infrastructure damage and violence.
