So many places offer discounts to seniors, but sometimes the details can be a bit hard to pin down. The best rule of thumb is to always ask if a senior discount is offered! Some places will even match a discount even if they don’t offer one themselves. This article is packed with some of the best discounts available at a variety of different venues, but never forget to ask.
Grocery Stores
Most grocery stores will offer a senior discount on a specific day of the week. It seems that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the most common, but sometimes it can be on other days. The age requirement also varies from store to store, usually starting at 50, 55, or 60. Check your favorite local grocery store for exact specifics!
Locally, Wegmans does not offer a senior discount. Tops gives a 6% discount to Seniors 60 and older on the first Tuesday of the month (you have to enroll for this at the service desk). While it seems that Price Chopper once did have a senior discount, it appears that they no longer do (or at the very least, do not have any information about it on their website).
The best discount offered by grocery stores seems to be 10%. The frequency can vary. Some offer discounts once a week or once a month. Those stores include:
1. Kroger – 10% off first Wednesday of the month
2. Gristedes Supermarket – 10% off every Tuesday
3. Albertsons – 10% off first Wednesday of the month
Some stores offer a more regular discount every week, but at only 5%. These include:
4. Publix – 5% every Wednesday
5. Shoprite – 5-10% on Tuesdays or Wednesdays
6. Harris Teeter – 5% every Thursday
Restaurants
Almost every restaurant has a senior discount of some kind, from a % off to a special menu just for seniors. When in doubt, the available discount is around 10% off, but you should always ask! Since there are just too many to name, I will try to highlight the very best deals you can find. One last tip: You may need to show your AARP card to get some of these discounts.
Best discounts at restaurants:
7. Carrabba’s Italian Grill – 20% off on Wednesdays with your AARP card
8. Denny’s – 20% off with your AARP card
9. Dunkin’ Donuts – free donut with the purchase of a large coffee with your AARP card
10. Outback Steakhouse – 15% off on Monday through Thursday with your AARP card
11. Papa John’s – 25% off online orders with code AARP25
Travel
The discounts on car rentals are actually really good with all the major companies offering a discount.
12. Hertz– 25% off with an AARP card
13. Avis– 25% off with an AARP card
14. Alamo – 25% off with an AARP card
15. National – up to 30% with an AARP card.
There is also a 5 % discount for the (16) Greyhound bus and 15% for (17) Amtrak (both require the traveler to be at least 62 years of age).
Most airlines offer a senior discount, but they don’t publicly commit to the discount amount. You have to call to do the booking and ask for the discount at that time.
Major cruise lines like (18) Carnival and (19) Royal Caribbean also offer discounts for those over 55, but they can vary from trip to trip.
Most hotels have a senior discount of some kind, which either vary or run the standard 10% off, and most require an AARP card. Some of the more notable discounts include:
20. Hyatt Hotels – up to 50% off for those of 62 years of age or older – WOW!
21. Marriott Hotels – 15% for those of 62 years of age or older
22. Super 8 Motels – up to 20% off with your AARP card
23. Wyndam Hotels – up to 20% off with your AARP card
24. Holiday Inn Hotels – between 10 and 30% off for those of 62 years of age or older, but it can very depending on location
The following places offer between 20 and 30% off for those of 60 years of age or older:
25. Cambria Suites
26. Clarion Inns
27. Comfort Inns and Suites
28. Econo Lodge
29. Quality Inns
Entertainment/Shopping
The most obvious thing to look at first is the movies.
30. AMC Theaters have the best deal with up to 30% for those of 60 years of age or older.
31. Regal Theaters may also do the up to 30% discount and seem to offer a discount on refreshments with your AARP card, but both vary by location.
32. Cinemark Theaters also offer varying discounts on Mondays for those of 62 years of age or older.
Gym memberships are another area where seniors can find discounts. Many seniors are eligible for a free SilverSneakers membership through their health care plans. A SilverSneakers membership grants access to over 13,000 various gyms across the country or to special fitness classes in the community. Some gyms offer their own senior discounts as well. Some vary by community, but some chains, like (33) Bally, offer a universal discount. Bally offers $100 off of a gym membership to those 62 years of age or older.
(34) National Parks across the US honor a lifetime pass, which costs only $10, and grants access to over 2,000 National Parks. Depending on the site, the pass could also entitle seniors to further discounts on things like camping and swimming.
Many theme parks also offer senior discounts (which my Grandma always wanted me to use for myself, since there was no way she was interested in a roller coaster). Disney World is sadly not among the discount offers, but:
(35) Busch Gardens and (36) Seaworld offer $3 off of a one-day pass.
Finally, many places to shop offer senior discounts. Again, the standard seems to be 10% off, so I won’t list all the places which do that, but be sure to ask anywhere that you shop. Some of the better shopping discounts include:
37. Kohls – 15% off in store for those of 60 years of age or older
38. Bealls – 20% off on the first Tuesday of the month for those of 50 years of age or older
39. Bon-Ton – 15% off on senior discount days for those of 55 years of age or older
40. Dress Barn – 20% off for those of 55 years of age or older
41. Stein Mart – 20% off red dot clearance on the first Monday of the month for those of 55 years of age or older
Other
I was really hoping to find discounts related to utilities, and while they exist in some states, that’s not the case in New York. It should be noted that National Grid does offer a reduced rate based on income, so if being a senior or retired has affected your income, you could qualify in that way.
Any chain haircut places (like (42) Supercuts, etc.) usually offers a senior discount that it will vary by location. As far as the locally owned places, it’s worth asking, they can usually be very friendly and accommodating!
There are lots of continuing education opportunities for seniors as well. Some may be offered through local colleges and universities (these likely include a small fee). There are also specific programs just for seniors, like Oasis, which offer not only classes, but programs and assistance with computers, health care, etc.
If you are growing older with some beloved pets, you’ll be excited to know that (43) 1-800-PetMeds offers a 5% discount for online orders and give free shipping along with it. The purchase has to be over $40 to qualify. Use code MCT5 for this discount.
(44) 1-800-Flowers also offers an online order discount, but of 20%. Use code SENIORS for this discount.
There are also options for cell phone discounts as a senior. (45) Verizon Wireless has a plan specifically for those of 65 years of age or older, which has 200 anytime minutes for $29.99. This is a great option if you don’t have a cell now, don’t plan to use one a lot, or have been holding out because you don’t need unlimited minutes and don’t like the prices! However, if you use a cell phone regularly or want to have a data plan, this won’t cut it. AARP also offers some cellular packages.
Seniors likely qualify for discounts on their auto insurance, but this will vary between carriers. Many auto places offer discounts as well. It’s best to ask there, since they all vary by age and which services are needed for the car. Check out the following:

Last, but certainly not least, seniors can expect many discounts on prescriptions! There are far too many pharmacies to name, but some of the highlights include:
50. Rite Aid – 15% off generic and name brand prescriptions (some exceptions)
51. Target – 10-50% off prescriptions, covers your whole household, add in the rewards program, and earn discounts for shopping in store
52. AARP – average 38% off prescriptions with AARP membership
53. CVS has a savings plan, but you pay an annual fee and the list of what does or does not get a discount in lengthy as opposed to simple. Best to ask for help in store on this one!
