There’s a trend toward the educational in this week’s video selection, raising awareness about homelessness in New York, why bullying might be a bad life move and a spoof advert on how to tell black people apart…
1. Ping Pong Summer (trailer)
Director Michael Tully has released the trailer for Sundance hit, Ping Pong Summer. Set in 1985, the film follows a shy 13-year-old boy called Rad Miracle who becomes obsessed with hip-hop and ping pong on a summer holiday. It promises to be a full on nostalgia trip with indie cred and has already got us longing for summer days (and boomboxes…) Release is set for 6 June, 2014.
2. Have the Homeless Become Invisible?
In this social experiment, unsuspecting people walked by relatives pretending to be homeless. Would they notice their family members or have the homeless become invisible? The New York City Rescue Mission worked alongside Agency Silver + Partners, production company Smuggler, and director Jun Diaz to create an experiment called “Make Them Visible”. Using hidden cameras, the experiment had people walk past their own family members, who were made up to look homeless. Not one person stops and recognises their loved ones.
3. I Will Survive
A funny take on a serious subject, this anti-bullying ad is set to a soundtrack of ‘I Will Survive’, and features a number of picked-on kids who are planning their revenge while getting tortured at school. A lesson to us all.
4. How To Tell Black People Apart
In light of an extremely awkward recent exchange between a KTLA News anchor and Samuel L. Jackson, in which he confused him with Laurence Fishburne, actor David Alan Grier teamed up with Jimmy Kimmel to create a spoof advert for a book titled How To Tell Black People Apart. So just remember, PATWWFLLM, or Pay Attention To What We F**king Look Like Motherf**kers!
5. Avril Lavigne – Hello Kitty
Former sk8ter grrl, Avril Lavigne set the internet into a spin earlier this week with a girly J-pop-inspired music video for her latest single ‘Hello Kitty’. The singer has blasted accusations of racism on Twitter saying ’”RACIST??? LOLOLOL!!! I love Japanese culture,’ adding, ’I spend half of my time in Japan. I flew to Tokyo to shoot this video, specifically for my Japanese fans, WITH my Japanese label, Japanese choreographers AND a Japanese director IN Japan.’
