It’s great to be British. What’s not to love – the rain, the fish and chips, the British summer time, the Daily Mail. And then of course the sense of humour (do you really think we’d pay tribute to the Daily Mail were we not wildly witty?).

But on a serious note, us Brits have outshone ourselves over the past few years, and it’s fair to say that national pride has skyrocketed. Even our manufacturing industry is feeling a bit better about itself, and according to The Telegraph (we like them, no sarcasm) in the three months prior to September, the industry expanded by 1.5%, the fastest growth rate since 2010 making our nation the ninth biggest manufacturer in the world. Therefore the Best of Britannia show couldn’t come at a more apt time, and if you’re free today, we strongly recommend you head down.

The exhibition is a real celebration of home grown talent with businesses from all corners of the UK brought together in a big British bash. Their artisan crafts employ traditional skills that have been passed down through generations and contribute to our rich British heritage.

The showcase does not focus on one particular area of manufacturing; rather it crosses many industries joining classical car designers such as Morgan Motor Cars, with jewellery designers like the Highly Commended Jewellery Designer of the Year, Jessica De Lotz. Other craftsmen and women include cocktail connoisseurs Kamm & Sons and shoe designers Joseph Cheaney & Sons along with the respected Justin Deakin. There are bakers and boats, bags and bikes all under one roof and every item from the simple loaf of bread to the most intricate stitch or extravagant motorcycle has been made traditionally here in the UK, with a dedication that only comes from true passion and skill, if we do say so ourselves.

What’s more, to mark the 2013 show, Harris Elliott has curated an installation that features mannequins from Mannequino and other never before seen works from the likes of Jack Sheppard, Christopher Raeburn, Private White VC and Ally Capellino. Great Britain indeed.

The exhibition runs from October 4th – October 5th and takes place at The Farmiloe Building near Smithfield Market (nearest tube, Barbican/Farringdon).
