Four men found guilty of fatally gang raping a medical student in Delhi, India, have been sentenced to death.
Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta were found guilty on all counts earlier this week.
Sharma, broke down in tears as the sentence was announced.
The attack in December last year saw the 23-year-old student die two weeks later in a Singapore hospital. The story grabbed headlines and sparked protests around the world.
Sentencing the four men on Friday, Judge Yogesh Khanna said the case fell into the "rarest of rare category".
He added that the attack "shocked the collective conscience" of India, and that "courts cannot turn a blind eye" to such crimes, the BBC reported.
Ram Singh, a fifth defendant, was found hanged in his cell, but his lawyer suggested he had been murdered.
The sixth defendant, a juvenile, has already been found guilty of murder and rape, and was sentenced to three years in a correction facility.
