CITY OF NEWBURGH – As Orange County Sheriff’s Deputies Slesinsky and Morales were driving in the area of Van Ness St. and Lutheran St. on Friday, Feb 3, 2017 about 11:39 a.m. they heard a single gunshot.

As deputies notified City of Newburgh Police headquarters, they began driving toward to location from which they heard the shot.

In the area of Broadway and City Terrace, deputies noticed numerous people running. They also noticed a black vehicle flee the area heading westbound on Broadway.

Deputies pursued the vehicle and, with the assistance of City of Newburgh Police, stopped it the area of Mill St. and Ann St.

Other responding officers located a 39-year-old Newburgh resident lying on the ground with a single gunshot wound to the back near Broadway and City Terrace.

The victim was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital by Mobile Life Ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries, said police.

The operator and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified by police as 69-year-old James Beckwith of Newburgh.

According to officials, police recovered a black Rossi .38 caliber revolver from Beckwith’s vehicle believed to be the alleged weapon used in the shooting.

Beckwith was arrested and charged with Assault in the 1st degree, a Class B felony, and Felony Weapons Possession.

He was processed and is being held for arraignment in City of Newburgh Court.
