LIBERTY – Kim Simons lives in Sullivan County, but lately her renown as a master cake and food artist with an astonishing skill set has been going viral.

Kim – who credits her high school art teacher for her diverse artistry – has recently been featured on four different Food Network shows, including “Cake Wars,” and “Duff Till Dawn,” and was recognized in “Dessert Professional” magazine as one of the top ten cake artists in the United States. Kim, who got bitten by the art bug in high school, credits her art teacher, Leland Parks with sowing the seeds of diversity in her artistic soul.

“He offered me every thing possible, every medium possible in style,” she said, as Leland looked on, beaming like the proud teacher he still is. “So I had to do body, I had to do abstract, nature, or whatever. Then different mediums, where you used the palate knife, or the brush; sculpting was next door; photography. I was making independent study after independent study just to spend my whole time in the art world. That’s all I wanted to do all day long.”

Kim’s sweet, edible (but not inexpensive) artwork will be on display at the Liberty Museum Arts Center through August 9. But, honestly – even though sugar-based art, I’m assured, does not spoil – most of her creations are simply too beautiful to eat.
