Kate Alexandra is one amazing lady. Only weeks away from giving birth to her second child Kate braved the intense Sydney storms last month, the same storms that left 200,000 homes without power, to get to Hub Sydney to teach her weekly yoga class.

What in heavens would motivate a person to do such a thing?

According to Kate it’s commitment and love.

“I have a commitment to my students, I love sharing space with them and passing on the teachings of yoga.  Also, I think things like weather are often worse in our mind than in reality. The resistance we experience when we think the conditions are going to be unfavourable is the hardest part to deal with. I was very tempted to stay at home, especially once a few of you started saying you would totally understand if I didnt not come in. However, it comes back to commitment and love.”

One of the incredible perks of working out of Hub Sydney is the fact that I get my weekly yoga fix every Wednesday.

The convenience of having a yoga class inside the coworking space is that I don’t have to worry about rushing to and from a yoga studio before or after work, and yoga definitely helps me get centred and relaxed during times of stressful living and working in busy city like Sydney.

Kate explains that at a purely physiological level, moving through yoga postures has a huge positive impact on the body and overall wellbeing; it restores good circulation, helps unravel patterns of tension developed from sitting all day, tones, strengthens and releases endorphins.

Mentally, the process of moving and breathing in sync pacifies the mind, so if you are busy and feeling stress or overwhelm, yoga can help you enter a calmer more productive state of mind.

“The flowing hatha yoga I teach, switches on the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the healing, calming function of the nervous system (as opposed to the sympathetic nervous system, often called the fight/flight response we experience when we are stressed). So by moving and breathing, consciously, you can actually change the way you feel.”

Kate shared that she’s transitioning through an extraordinary time of creation and incubation, and expects to see the fruits of the previous 6 months of work over the next 6 months.

“Personally, I am in the process of growing a human, so looking forward to welcoming this little one to the world and finding our new groove as a family of four. And professionally in the last 2months I have completely re-branded my business, rebuilt my website and am creating a new online yoga course called YogaMama– for mums-to-be and mums for young children to access anytime, anywhere. I’ll be launching YogaMama sometime before my baby is born. So that’s two rather substantial projects which I’m very excited about bringing into the world in the next few months.”

Kate also credits her personal and professional growth to the amazing connections and collaboration opportunities she’s gained at Hub.

“Personally I loved being connected with the creative, spiritual and socially conscious entrepreneurs who are attracted to attending my classes.Business wise, I am a solo entrepreneur and a parent I juggle close to full-time care for my son while running my yoga business, so I created Hub Yoga, not only because I wanted to serve this community, but also because I need to be plugged into a network of inspiring people who get stuff done. In the last 2 years (almost) I have collaborated with a bunch of folks at Hub, hosted and attended events and made some great friends.”

Kate is very passionate about Yoga Nidra, a form of relaxation yoga, because of the profound impact it has on reducing stress and restoring energy of those who are exhausted and not getting enough sleep. They say 20minutes of yoga nidra equals about 3 hours for deep sleep, so if you are in need of a de-stress and/or need to top up on sleep – get on it!

To experience Yoga Nidra yourself you can download a free guided body awareness yoga nidra mp3 at Kate’s site.

As Kate is now on break from teaching to have a baby, Hub yoga continues with a new yoga teacher. Join us on  Wednesdays 12pm – 1pm to experience the benefits of yoga for yourself.
