Although I agree that just speaking up in class seems to benefit those more prone to speaking up, there are situations in which participation and attendance is a more accurate method of deriving leaning than the final product. I speak from experience with Design Studio’s while attending Architecture school. The grade we received for our final presentation was always an exercise in subjectivity, i.e. how well did the instructor “like” my project, even though there was a mandatory attendance requirement to receive a passing grade. In all the years of attending studio, I had several classmates who would show up to the first, and last, two sessions and receive a grade similar to my own or just under. This was a frustrating system in which the specified criteria for assessment were not followed by those who wrote them. If anything, under these rules, I should have received straight A’s for my 100% attendance and participation in all studio discussions.
There is no blanket strategy to assess and grade every subject matter. What matters is how well the students actually learn the material, and not just regurgitate the correct answers. Each teacher must be given the flexibility to set the evaluation criteria based on the class goals.
Trophies of Participation have no place in academics.

One professor I had, had a requirement that students have to answer to many questions throughout the semester (which was stupid); fortunately, he gave an alternative where a student can also create a test question from that class and email it for participation points (also stupid). Because I’m introverted, I did the latter. Personally, I thought it was pointless work.

I am so glad to hear this topic addressed. I *hated* participation exercises because I was so innately unsuited to that type of activity, and am very grateful that my time in the classroom was so many years ago that I didn’t have to endure too many of them. I understand the value of learning to participate. Perhaps, though, it could be balanced out by helping extroverts to learn introverted techniques – have each of those exercises weighted equally, and have the rest of the grade based on just the knowledge. That would give both introverts and extroverts an equal “playing field”, separate from the knowledge.

I really appreciated this article. I did not finish the last year of my English lit degree due to a major shift in teaching. The wonderful “old school” teachers who gave lectures, from whom over my 3 years I had learned so much, were either retiring or I had taken every possible class from them. The shift was to make literature and writing classes heavily based on group work and participation. Although, there is value in some of this, the introverted nature of these disciplines is necessary to fine tuning of literary dissection and the craft of writing.

One thing I know, maybe I got the lowest grade in some of the classes but I really got the knowledge out of the classes. Introverts seem not there, dont participate but at the end people get some surprises.
